And I arrived between noon and afternoon

at the tomb of Abu Bakr, leader of those who know God.

And in the valley I renewed my ritual purity, asking

God to purify me of sin and the burden of guilt.

And there I prayed the noon prayer and rested for a while,

and there I also prayed the two units of the afternoon prayer.

And I turned to entreat God—exalted is He—by his honored standing,

that He ease my affairs in all that I hope for,

    فَرَبِّي تعالى يُبدِل العُسرَ باليُسر

    and grant me ease from Himself as a favor;

for my Lord, exalted is He, replaces hardship with ease,

until I am seen in Mecca, swaying

with the sway of elation at union, not the swagger of pride.

    أجارُ إذا جاوَرتُ طهَ من الجورِ

    And afterward may I spend the evening in Taybah, content;

I am sheltered from injustice when I dwell beside Taha.

    فتُربُ رسولِ اللَهِ أزهى من التِبرِ

    I rub my cheek in dust around the tomb, content;

for the soil of God's Messenger is more radiant than raw gold.

And Taybah—all fragrant things, through its perfume,

waft forth; so ask not about ambergris from al-Shihr.

So you ask our Lord, by Muhammad's honored standing,

and by Taybah and the Sacred House, and by the Stone,

to favor us with reaching them both,

all together, with neither interruption nor restriction,

and to supply this delegation from His overflowing bounty

with the good they hoped for at this place,

until they attain their wishes in Mina,

and each of them is granted profitable trade,

and the sweetness of their good fortune gladdens them in Taybah

through a visit to the best of creation, the bestower of kindness:

Muhammad, praised in all the scriptures,

by the tongues of the dwellers of the horizon, sea, and land.

And if the gracious Lord Himself has praised

the radiance of his praised character in the clear text of the Revelation,

then what can all those who praise him say,

even if they filled the horizons with praise and gratitude?

May God's blessing be upon him as long as a longing one yearns

for him, and as long as his praises baffle my mind.
