وسارَand he journeyed إلىto السويسِSuez وليwhile I have فُؤادٌa heart
وسارَ إلى السويسِ ولي فُؤادٌ
بهin it منfrom نارِthe fire of فُرقَتِهِseparation from him اتِقادُburning
به من نارِ فُرقَتِهِ اتِقادُ
And he journeyed to Suez, while my heart
He marched to Suez with a heart
Burns with the fire of separation from him.
Inflamed by the fire of parting
فياso, oh لَيتَif only الزمانَtime يجودُbestows generously يوماًone day
فيا لَيتَ الزمانَ يجودُ يوماً
بلقياهُwith a meeting with him وماyet not دهريmy days جوادُgenerous
بلقياهُ وما دهري جوادُ
Oh, if only time would one day grant
Oh, would that time might grant me one day
A meeting with him—yet my days are not generous.
To meet with him—but time is no giving steed
