ومما سلاني عن هَواهُم وصدَّني

ومما سلاني عن هَواهُم وصدَّني

وقد كنتُ مَغرىً بالهوى وهو دَيدَني

وقد كنتُ مَغرىً بالهوى وهو دَيدَني

And among what made me forget my love for them and turned me away—

They asked me of their love, and I rebuffed them,

though I had been enamored of love, and it was my wont—

Though love once tempted me, and was my wont.

نفارُهُم مني ومن كل عاشقٍ

نفارُهُم مني ومن كل عاشقٍ

عفيفٍ وهُم في طوع كلِّ يدي دَني

عفيفٍ وهُم في طوع كلِّ يدي دَني

was their shunning me and every lover

That they should spurn me, and each noble lover,

who is chaste, while they submit to the hands of every base man.

While freely yielding to each grasping hand -
