ألاAh! فيin سبيلthe cause of اللَهGod ضاعتwas lost قصيدَتيmy poem
ألا في سبيل اللَه ضاعت قصيدَتي
وإنand though كانhad خيرُthe best الخَلقِof creation أبدىshown قبولَهاacceptance of it
وإن كان خيرُ الخَلقِ أبدى قبولَها
Ah, in God's cause my poem was lost,
Alas, for the cause of God my poem is lost
Though the best of creation had shown his acceptance of it.
Though the best of mankind has shown it favor
فياso, oh لَيتَwould that شِعريmy knowledge هَلwhether تُرَدُّit is returned لِفِكرَتيto my mind
فيا لَيتَ شِعري هَل تُرَدُّ لِفِكرَتي
وأعلَمُand I know منهاof it شِعبَهاits branch وقبيلَهاand its tribe
وأعلَمُ منها شِعبَها وقبيلَها
So, if only I knew whether it would be restored to my mind,
I wish I knew, will it return to my thoughts?
And I might come to know its branch and tribe.
I know its clans and tribes, each meter and savor
