يوماً بفاسٍ فوي مَكناسةٍ زَمَناً

وتارَةً في زوايا العَمِّ والخالِ

A day in Fez, and a while in Meknes,

Once in Fez, once in Meknes days gone by

and sometimes in my paternal and maternal uncles’ lodges;

And at times in corners of paternal uncle and aunt

وبُرهَةً سَفَري صَفرو وآونةً

وبُرهَةً سَفَري صَفرو وآونةً

تازا وطوراً أرى أفلي الفَلا الخالي

تازا وطوراً أرى أفلي الفَلا الخالي

and for a while my journey takes me to Sefrou, and at times

For a while my journey was fruitless and once

to Taza; sometimes I am seen combing the empty wilderness.

In Taza and from time to time I see barren empty plains
