My eye poured forth abundant tears,

And my ribs held a blaze and fire.

And my patience grew distant—after separation, can

the lovelorn find solace and endurance?

O dwellings of my loved ones, my choice was

to see you in the evening and at daybreak.

    إنّما كان بالقضاءِ اضطِرارا

    My decision was not made gladly or of my own free will;

It was only compulsion imposed by fate.

And my choice is never to part from you,

Yet I do not have the choice.

So may God graciously grant a return,

And may He quench the blaze and fire.
