قُلْsay لمَنto the one who زادincreased إِذas تَباعدdrew away بُعْداin distance
وتَناسىand feigned forgetting عهْدِيmy pledge ولمand did not أَنْسَI forget عهْداa pledge
Say to the one who grew more distant as he drew away,
Say to the one who grew distant when we parted ways
And feigned forgetting my pledge, though I forgot no pledge:
And forgot my pledge though I've not forgotten our bond
لاdo not يَغُرَّنْكَever deceive you ماwhat تَرىyou see مِنof ودِادِيmy affection
فَلَعلِّيfor perhaps I إِنْif شِئْتُI wished غَيَّرْتُI changed ودَّاaffection
Do not let the affection you see in me deceive you;
Do not be fooled by the affection you see from me
For perhaps, if I wished, I could change my love.
For if I wished, I could change my love in an instant
لاno وحقِّand by the sanctity of الهَوىlove وحقِّand by the sanctity of لَيالِيnights
هِits ومنand by Him who صاغَfashioned حُسْنthe beauty of وجْهِكyour face فَرْداpeerless
No—by love, and by the nights
No, by the true passion and the truth of those nights
Of love, and by Him who fashioned your face's peerless beauty,
And the one who uniquely crafted your beauty
ماnot أُطِيقُI am able to do الَّذِيwhat ادَّعيْتI claimed ولَوْand even if مُلْI were granted mastery of it (first fragment)
I were granted mastery of it (second fragment) لمnot أَكُنْI would be لغَيْركَto anyone other than you عبْداa slave
I cannot do what I claimed; and even if I were granted
I cannot bear what you claimed even if I were
The power to do so, I would be a slave to none but you.
Given mastery, for I'll be slave to none but you
