ياO صاحِبِيmy companion قُمْrise فَقدfor indeed أَطَلْنَاwe have lingered long
يا صاحِبِي قُمْ فَقد أَطَلْنَا
أَنَحْنُare we طُولَthroughout المَدىthe span of time هُجُودُasleep
أَنَحْنُ طُولَ المَدى هُجُودُ
O my companion, rise, for we have lingered long.
O my friend, arise, for we have lingered long
Are we to remain asleep for all time?
Are we to be humiliated all our days?
فقالَso he said ليto me لنshall not نَقُومَwe rise منهاfrom it
فقالَ لي لن نَقُومَ منها
ماas long as دامَremains مِنfrom فَوْقِناabove us الصَّعِيدُthe earth
ما دامَ مِن فَوْقِنا الصَّعِيدُ
He said to me: We shall not rise from it
He said to me, we shall not depart from here
so long as the earth remains above us.
As long as the barren land lies over us
تذكُرُyou remember كَمْhow many لَيْلَةٍnight لَهَوْناwe made merry
تذكُرُ كَمْ لَيْلَةٍ لَهَوْنا
فيin ظِلِّهَاits shade والزَّمَانُand time عِيدُa festival
في ظِلِّهَا والزَّمَانُ عِيدُ
Do you remember how many nights we made merry
Remember how many a night we enjoyed
in their shade, while time was a festival?
In its shade, and time was festive
وكَمْand how much سُرُورٍjoy هَمَىpoured down علَيْنَاupon us
وكَمْ سُرُورٍ هَمَى علَيْنَا
سحابةًa cloud ثرّةًrain-rich تجُودُpours freely
سحابةً ثرّةً تجُودُ
And how much joy poured down upon us,
And how much gladness hovered over us
a rain-rich cloud pouring freely!
Like an abundant, generous cloud
كُلٌّall كأَنْas though لمnot يكُنْit existed تَقَضَّىhas passed away
كُلٌّ كأَنْ لم يكُنْ تَقَضَّى
وشُؤمُهand its ill consequence حاضِرٌpresent عَتِيدُat hand
وشُؤمُه حاضِرٌ عَتِيدُ
All has passed away, as though it had never been,
Each as if what had passed was never fulfilled
yet its ill consequence is present, at hand.
And his misfortune is present, imminent
حصَّلَهrecorded it كاتِبٌa scribe حَفِيظٌwatchful
حصَّلَه كاتِبٌ حَفِيظٌ
وضمَّهُand gathered it صادِقٌtruthful شَهِيدُa witness
وضمَّهُ صادِقٌ شَهِيدُ
A watchful scribe has recorded it,
A vigilant scribe has recorded it
and a truthful witness has gathered it.
And a truthful, witnessing confidant has collected it
ياO وَيْلَنَاwoe to us إِنْif تَنَكَّبَتْنَاturns away from us
يا وَيْلَنَا إِنْ تَنَكَّبَتْنَا
رَحْمَةُthe mercy مَنthe One whose بَطْشُهُHis forceful grasp شَدِيدُsevere
رَحْمَةُ مَن بَطْشُهُ شَدِيدُ
Woe to us if we are passed over
Oh woe to us, if the mercy of Him whose might is great
by the mercy of Him whose grasp is fierce!
Turns away from us
ياO ربِّmy Lord عفْواًpardon فأَنْتَfor You موْلىًa master
يا ربِّ عفْواً فأَنْتَ موْلىً
قَصَّرfell short فيin أَمْرِكَYour command العبيدُthe servants
قَصَّر في أَمْرِكَ العبيدُ
O my Lord, grant pardon, for You are the Master;
O Lord, pardon, for You are Master
the servants have fallen short in obeying Your command.
Your servants fall short in Your cause
