مُلازِمٍ لِلْكُؤوسِ راتِبْ
I would give my life for Usayma—what a drinking companion,
I ransom Usayma from a companion
devoted to the cups, ever constant!
Who sticks to cups regularly

وَهْيَ لَعَمْرِي مِن العَجائِبْ
They have marveled at her sleeplessness,
They were amazed by her in sleepiness
and she, by my life, is among the wonders.
Yet, by my life, she is of wonders
قالُواthey said تَجافىkept away الرُّقادُsleep عنهاfrom her
قالُوا تَجافى الرُّقادُ عنها
فقُلْتُso I said لاnot تَرْقُدُsleep الكَواكِبْthe stars
فقُلْتُ لا تَرْقُدُ الكَواكِبْ
They said, “Sleep has kept away from her.”
They said sleep avoids her
So I said, “The stars do not sleep.”
So I said, the stars do not sleep
