هل أَبْصَرَتْ عَيْناكَ يا خَلِيلي

هل أَبْصَرَتْ عَيْناكَ يا خَلِيلي

قَنَافِذاً تُباعُ في زَنْبِيلِ

قَنَافِذاً تُباعُ في زَنْبِيلِ

Have your eyes seen, my dear friend,

Hedgehogs being sold in a basket—

من حَرْشَفٍ مُعْتَمدٍ جَلِيلِ

من حَرْشَفٍ مُعْتَمدٍ جَلِيلِ

ذِي إِبَرٍ تَنفُذُ جِلْدَ الفِيلِ

ذِي إِبَرٍ تَنفُذُ جِلْدَ الفِيلِ

Of stout, massive artichokes,

With needles that pierce an elephant’s hide,

كأَنَّها أَنْيَابُ بِنْتِ الغُولِ

كأَنَّها أَنْيَابُ بِنْتِ الغُولِ

لَوْ نُخسَتْ في استِ امرئ ثَقِيلِ

لَوْ نُخسَتْ في استِ امرئ ثَقِيلِ

As though they were the fangs of the ghoul’s daughter?

If they were jabbed into a heavy fellow’s arse,

لَقَفَّزتْهُ نَحْوَ أَرْضِ النِّيلِ

لَقَفَّزتْهُ نَحْوَ أَرْضِ النِّيلِ

لَيْسَتْ تُرى طَيَّ حَشا مِنْدِيلِ

لَيْسَتْ تُرى طَيَّ حَشا مِنْدِيلِ

They would send him leaping toward the land of the Nile.

They are not seen tucked into a napkin’s folds:

نُقْلُ السّخِيفِ المائِنِ الجَهُولِ

نُقْلُ السّخِيفِ المائِنِ الجَهُولِ

وأَكْلُ قَوْمٍ بارِحِي العقُولِ

وأَكْلُ قَوْمٍ بارِحِي العقُولِ

The snacks of the foolish, lying ignoramus,

And the food of people bereft of reason.

أُقْسِمُ لا أَطعَمْتُها أَكيلِي

أُقْسِمُ لا أَطعَمْتُها أَكيلِي

ولا طَعِمْتُها على شَمُولِ

ولا طَعِمْتُها على شَمُولِ

I swear I shall not feed them to my table companion,

Nor shall I taste them with wine.
