    فاشْرَبْ هَنِيئاً عَلَيْكَ التَّاجُ مُرْتَفِقَا

    Your good fortune sang to you in the shade of sword-blades and gave you drink;

    so drink in bliss, reclining, with the crown upon you.

    May the lions be watered, whose souls share death as drink,

    and wear endurance as chain mail on the day of battle.

    They rose to support you when there rose, speaking extempore,

    the orator of your bounty among them, scattering silver.

    You journeyed by night, leading the army of victory, taking

    the Milky Way's paths as roads in pursuit of glory,

    in the shadow of a dense, dark night of steel mail,

    from which your face unveils the dawn to the steeds.

    And a foe's flank, on the morning of terror, is inscribed

    by a pen of sword-blades that knows no practice strokes.

    You sent a river of Zanj blood flowing over the river,

    until it became a sky mantled in twilight's red.

    And the highest celestial sphere lent aid in killing them,

    until the fleet sank with those escaping in it—

    وبانَ جَدُّكَ يجلُو صفْحَهُ يقَقَا

    every Black man who made no headway over the swell;

    and your good fortune shone forth, revealing its face pure white.

    As though his head, with the spear bearing it,

    were a raven of parting, cawing on a bān tree upon the dune.

    أَوْ عاذَ بالنَّهْرِ مَسْلُوبَ القُوَى غَرِقَا

    When he faltered, the Khatti spear pierced his throat;

    or, if he sought refuge in the river, stripped of strength, he drowned.

    And on what river could a crosser hope to reach the farther shore,

    when its ships float, left shattered into fragments?
