هَلاwhy did you not سَتَرْتَyou concealed الشَّيْنَugliness بالزَّيْنِwith beauty
مِنfrom قَبْلِbefore إِحْضَارِsummoning الوَزِيرَيْنِthe two viziers
Why did you not veil ugliness with beauty
Why did you not conceal ugliness with beauty
before summoning the two viziers?
Before summoning the two viziers?
قدindeed عَلِمَاthey both knew أَنَّهُمَاthat they both أُحْضِراthey were both summoned
لخَلْوةٍfor a private meeting أَثْقَلَheavier مِنthan دَينِdebt
The two knew that they had been brought
They both knew that they had been summoned
to a private audience more burdensome than debt.
For a private meeting more burdensome than debt.
لمّاwhen تَدَانَتْit drew near قابَa span of قَوْسَيْنِtwo bows
أَصابَهَاhe struck it الحاسِدُthe envious one بالعَيْنِwith the evil eye
When the two drew near, to within two bow-lengths,
When it drew within two bow-lengths,
the envier struck them both with the evil eye.
The envious man struck it with the evil eye.
فانْصَرفاso they both departed مِثْلَlike انْصِرافِthe departure of الفَتَىthe young man
أَسْلَمَhe surrendered إِلْفاًa beloved companion ليَدِto the hand of البَينِseparation
So the two departed like the departure of a youth
So they both departed, like a young man leaving
who yields his beloved to the hand of separation.
Who had surrendered a beloved to separation's hand.
صَدَّهُمَاit drove them both back مِنfrom قِرْدِكyour monkey المُصْطَفَىthe chosen one
نَطْحَةa headbutt نَطَّاحٍa headbutter برَوْقَينِwith two horns
What drove them both from your chosen monkey was
They were driven back from your chosen monkey
the butt of a butting beast with two horns.
By a headbutt from a two-horned headbutter.
وماand not رأَىsaw النَّاسُthe people علىover ماwhat مَضَىhas passed
مِنfrom قَبْلِهِbefore him قِرْداًa monkey بقَرْنَينِwith two horns
Never, in all time past, had people seen
And never, in all the time gone by, had people seen
before him a monkey with two horns.
Before him a monkey with two horns.
أَرْبَعَةٌfour فيin مَجْلِسٍa gathering جُمِّعُواthey were brought together
فطارَso flew هَذَانِthese two بهَذَينِwith these two
Four were gathered together in an assembly;
Four were brought together in a gathering,
then these two flew off with these two.
So these two sent those two flying.
قدindeed لَزِمَاthey both clung to جَنْبَيْكَyour two sides لمdid not يَبْرَحَاthey both budge
لَهْفِيmy grief علىover ضَيْعةِthe wasting of جَنْبَينِtwo sides
Those two had clung to your sides, never leaving—
They clung to your two sides and did not budge.
alas for two flanks gone to waste!
Alas for two sides gone to waste!
فأَنْتَso you ماin the space بَيْنَهُمَاbetween them both جالِسٌsitting
جُلُوسَthe sitting of أَيْرٍa penis بَيْنَbetween خُصْيَينِtwo testicles
And there you sit between the pair,
So you sit in the space between them,
as a penis sits between two testicles.
As a penis sits between two testicles.
