Near, yet far away in the abode of humiliation,
He gives generously and voices his grief with skill.

The one who denounced his offense before the Imam—what
An envious enemy of the sons of noble men!
وماand nothing ضَرَّهُharmed him إِلاexcept مُزَاحٌjesting ورِقَّةٌand tenderness

Nothing harmed him but jesting and tenderness,
Which made him foolish in reputation, though he was wise.

Someone else committed the wrong in the water pavilion,
Yet a neck was collared with the grave charge for it.

Nothing is held against me but poetry, which passion inscribed,
And a peerless verse carried it throughout the world.

لحُسْنِfor the beauty of المعانِيmeanings تَارةًat times فأَزِيدُand I add more
I speak of things I never did, seeking
The beauty of meanings at times—and then I add more.
فإِنْso if طالbecame prolonged ذِكْرِيmention of me بالمُجُونِfor licentiousness فإِنَّنِيthen indeed I am

If my name is long linked with licentiousness, I am
Both wretched and happy through words woven into verse.

Was I the first among lovers
Whose reason eyes and cheeks brought low?

And if my name is long linked with licentiousness, these are
Ordeals no hardy man could bear:
فراقٌseparation وسِجْنٌand prison واشْتِياقٌand longing وذلَّةand humiliation
وجبَّارُand a tyrant among حُفَّاظٍguards عليّover me عَتيدُever ready
Separation, prison, longing, humiliation,
And a tyrant among guards, standing ready over me.

Who will tell the young men that, now parted from them, I am
Lodged in the house of oppressors, an outcast?

Lodged in a house whose inmates, from torment,
Stand upon death’s embers even as they sit.

And within its recesses the jinn are heard:
A simple strain, like an echo’s refrain, and song.

The prison door never shakes without shattering
Our hearts and livers, for fear of death.

I bear no fetter that may wear thin; rather,
My gaze is fettered by the Imam’s wrath.
وقُلْتُand I said لصدَّاحِto the loud singer among الحمامِdoves وقدwhile it had بكَىwept

I said to the loudly cooing dove, as it wept
Atop the palace for a mate, its tears flowing freely:
ألاlisten أَيُّهاO you الباكِيwho weep علىfor منthe one whom تُحِبُّهُyou love him

O you who weep for the one you love,
Both of us are tormented, alone in solitude.

عنfrom الإِلْفِthe beloved سُلْطَانٌa ruler علَيْهِtoward him شَدِيدُharsh
Will you draw near a lover whom
A ruler harsh toward him has driven far from his beloved?

Then it beat its wing-feathers, alighting
So close that it could come no closer.

It kept making me weep, and I made it weep with all my strength,
And longing had fuel beneath the ribs.

Until the walls wept at our long lament,
And a door with iron sides burst into sobs.

Battalions obeyed the Commander of the Faithful,
Maneuvering in every circumstance as he wills.
فللشَّمْسِso for the sun عنهاfrom them بالنَّهَارِby day تَأَخُّرٌa falling back

وللبدْرِand for the full moon عنهاfrom them بالظَّلامِin darkness صُدُودُa turning away
So the sun keeps back from them by day,
And the full moon shuns them in the dark.
أَلاah إِنَّهاindeed they are الأَيَّامُthe days تَلْعبُthey play بالفَتَىwith a young man

Ah, these are the days, playing with a man:
Ill fortunes glide by at times, and good fortunes too.

I had no strength to make a mighty power submit—
One of Time’s, displaying its reversals and repeating them.

And Alid might tamed my unruly steeds,
With lightning flashing toward bounty, and peals of thunder.
تَقُولُsays التَّيshe who مِنfrom بَيْتِهاher house خَفَّsped away مَرْكَبِيmy mount

She from whose house my mount sped away asks:
Are you close at hand, or far away?
فقُلْتُso I said لهاto her أَمْرِيmy affair إِلىto منthe one whom سَمَتْrose high بهwith him

I told her: my fate rests with him whom
His fathers and forefathers raised to glory.
