I have been told of people whose breasts seethe

against me, while my own breast is untroubled by them.

They listened intently to my words, and I let them hear something inimitable.

And they dived for my secret, but my nature baffled them.

One group said, “This poetry is not his poetry,”

and another said, “By God, we do not know.”

Have they not learned that I aspire to knowledge,

and that I myself race ahead, true to my stock?

Not everyone who leads fine steeds can handle them,

nor is everyone who sets them running called a racer.

    ولا شَيءَ أَجْلَى للشُّكُوكِ من الخُبْرِ

    So whoever wishes, let him test me, for I am here;

and nothing dispels doubts more surely than experience.
