بها أَيْنُنا مَحْبُوبُها وحَبَابُهَا
I have not forgotten our days at al-Nawus,
I have not forgotten the good old days
When our weariness was their darling and their passion,
When we were with those we loved
وفِتْيةَand young men ضَرْبٍof battle مِنfrom زِناتَةَZanata مُمْطِرٍraining down
وفِتْيةَ ضَرْبٍ مِن زِناتَةَ مُمْطِرٍ
بوَيْلِwith woe المَناياof death طَعْنُهاtheir thrusting وضِرابُهاand their striking
بوَيْلِ المَنايا طَعْنُها وضِرابُها
Nor the young warriors of Zanata, raining down
And youths wielding spears like lightning
Death's woe with their thrusts and blows.
Their stabbing and thrusting dealt death

صليّ لَظاهُ دَأْبُ قَوْمِي ودابُهَا
We took our stand upon the embers of death;
We stood on embers of death
Enduring its blaze was my people's way, and theirs.
Incessantly praying, the way of my people

When the sun sought there to devour our flesh,
When the sun set on it, eager
Its saliva streamed greedily over the steeds.
To devour our flesh, the horses salivated
