ياO سيِّداًmaster أَرِجتْwere fragrant طِيباًwith sweet fragrance شمائِلُهُhis qualities
وشاكَلَتْand matched شِعْرَهُhis poetry حُسْناًin beauty رَسَائِلُهُhis letters
O master whose qualities exhaled sweet fragrance,
O master, his traits are fragrant
and whose letters matched his poetry in beauty,
And his hair resembles the beauty of his messages
وسَائِلاًand one asking لِيَof me عَمَّاabout what لَيْسَis not يَجْهَلُهُhe is ignorant of it
ولاnor الَّذِيthe one who كُلِّفَwas charged with التَّفْصِيلَthe explanation جاهِلُهُignorant of it
and who asks me about what is not unknown to him,
Seeking from me what he does not ignore
nor unknown to the one charged with explaining it:
Nor what the one tasked with detail is ignorant of

The rose, in pledge and fragrance, is the twin of your pledge; never
The rose is a pact and blossoming, your pact's freshness does not
do its first blooms make its last forgotten in fragrance.
Let its latter sweetness make one forget its beginnings
ووَصْلُهand maintaining ties with it فيin كِلاboth الحالَيْنِstates مُفْتَرَضٌobligatory
سِيّانِequal قاطِعُهُone who severs it جَهْلاًin ignorance وواصِلُهُand one who maintains it
And maintaining ties with it in both states is a duty;
And its connection in both states is imperative
alike are he who severs it in ignorance and he who maintains it.
Alike are its cutter in ignorance and its connector
فالعُودُfor the lute يَخْفُقُthrobs والمِزْمَارُand the flute يَتْبَعُهُfollows it

For the lute throbs, and the flute follows it,
So the lute trembles and the flute follows it
and the wine-shunner's cares have been stirred.
And the passing breeze has stirred its warblers

Our days and youth defy its separations
