Did you weep when the company departed? [Final word unclear.]

I am a man whose ambition Time has toyed with,

and I was made to drink a brimming draught from calamities' cup.

And I stumbled, a noble steed seeking glory, and laughter burst

from the asses of mankind, who never cease their braying.

And when hopes darted toward me for me to attain them,

Time stood in their way there and thwarted them.

And if Abu Yahya's striving is delayed,

when can I hope, in time, to catch up with them?

He who clothes me in a golden robe from his bounty—

it dazzled the eyes, which could not endure its shimmer—

and who shields me from my time's vicissitudes, after

calamities had turned their eyes upon me.

How long before your steeds draw together for battle,

and you draw the slender blades of gleaming swords,

and block the earth's roads with a mighty host of yours

that leaves kings forever bowing their heads?

A sea: when the eagle of its banner flutters

at a land's borders, you need not fear its failure.

For God's sake, care for a land whose air nourished me,

and a band whose concern you never doubted.

The viper of calamities bit them, and they were suddenly struck

by its stupefying venom; be its antidote.

And open its locks with a decisive champion's resolve:

if that resolve sought to drive the Pleiades, he would drive them.

A hero who, when he courts souls for battle,

makes sword-edges beneath the battle-dust their bridal dower.

If his fingers opposed the raging winds

one day, he would block their horizons with some of those fingers.

And if, when he drew it forth from himself,

it confronted Orion, he would undo its belt.

And when kings race as steeds in battle

and generosity, he harshly severs their necks.

And were lions' mouths a watering place,

he would lead his horses to drink in their jaws.
