And a banisher of sleep, whose dwelling, when

The crowned ruler sleeps, lies among the folds of clothes.

It creeps by night toward bodies; its onrush tears

A veil from every body fashioned in luxury.

And it bites the buttocks of beauties, though it has no

Hand; yet its mouth is among the fiercest lances.

Lording it over every tender body,

Playing the darling right amid the glances of full-breasted maidens.

So when you try to drive it off, it flees, and no

Pursuit deters it from what it has grown used to.

And you see the sites of its bites stained

With the blood of hearts, though no dye has been applied to it.

A mighty lord, rolled into a ball of pitch-black night,

It walks in the open, and no clothes conceal it.

Great is the calamity it brings, yet its worth

Is baser and paltrier than a fly in the dust.
