وأَتاكَand came to you بالنَّيْرُوزِwith Nowruz شَوْقٌlonging حافِزٌimpelling
وأَتاكَ بالنَّيْرُوزِ شَوْقٌ حافِزٌ
وتَطَلُّعٌand yearning للزَّوْرfor visitors غِبَّafter تَطلعِyearning
وتَطَلُّعٌ للزَّوْر غِبَّ تَطلعِ
With Nowruz there came to you a driving longing,
And with Nowruz came an impelling longing to you,
and eager watch for visitors after long expectancy.
and a yearning for visitors, yearning after yearning.
وافاكَcame to you فيin زَمَنa season عَجِيبٍwondrous مُونِقٍdelightful
وافاكَ في زَمَن عَجِيبٍ مُونِقٍ
وأَتاكَand came to you فيamid زَهْرٍblossoms كَرِيمٍsplendid مُمْتِعِpleasing
وأَتاكَ في زَهْرٍ كَرِيمٍ مُمْتِعِ
It reached you in a wondrous, radiant time,
It came to you in a wondrous, delightful season,
and came to you amid noble, delightful bloom.
and came to you amid splendid, pleasing blossoms.
فانظُرso look إِلىat حُسْنthe beauty of الرَّبِيعِspring وقَدْand indeed جَلَتْhas unveiled
فانظُر إِلى حُسْن الرَّبِيعِ وقَدْ جَلَتْ
عنfrom ثَوْبِa robe نَوْرٍblossoms للربِيعِfor spring مُجَزَّعِvariegated
عن ثَوْبِ نَوْرٍ للربِيعِ مُجَزَّعِ
Behold the beauty of spring, now shining forth
So look upon spring's beauty, now unveiled
from spring’s flowered robe, striped with color.
in spring's variegated robe of blossoms.
فكأَنَّso as though نَرْجِسَهَاits narcissi وقَدand indeed حَشَدَتْit has teemed بهwith them
فكأَنَّ نَرْجِسَهَا وقَد حَشَدَتْ به
زهْرُbright ones النُّجُومِthe stars تقارَبَتْdrew close together فيat مَطْلَعِa rising-place
زهْرُ النُّجُومِ تقارَبَتْ في مَطْلَعِ
Its narcissi seem, as there gather about them
So its narcissi, with which it is thronged, are like
starry blossoms clustered close at their rising,
bright stars clustered at their rising,
أَوْor أَعْيُنُeyes الأَحْبَابِthe lovers حينwhen تَرَاسَلَتْexchanged messages
أَوْ أَعْيُنُ الأَحْبَابِ حين تَرَاسَلَتْ
باللَّحْظِthrough glances تَحْتَunder تَخَوُّفٍfear وتوقُّعِand anticipation
باللَّحْظِ تَحْتَ تَخَوُّفٍ وتوقُّعِ
or like the eyes of lovers as they exchange
or lovers' eyes when they exchange messages
glances with one another, fearful and expectant.
through glances, amid fear and anticipation.
وَبِهاand in it البَنَفْسَجُthe violet قدindeed حكىhas mirrored بخُضُوعِهِby its drooping
وَبِها البَنَفْسَجُ قد حكى بخُضُوعِهِ
وقُنُوِّand deep redness لَوْنٍa hue فيin سَوَادٍblackness مُشْبَعِsaturated
وقُنُوِّ لَوْنٍ في سَوَادٍ مُشْبَعِ
And there the violet, by its bowed humility, mimics,
And there the violet has mirrored, through its drooping
and by a hue deepening into saturated black,
and its crimson hue steeped in rich blackness,
خَدَّthe cheek الحَبِيبِthe beloved وقَدand indeed عَضَضْتَyou bit بِجَنَّةٍin a garden
خَدَّ الحَبِيبِ وقَد عَضَضْتَ بِجَنَّةٍ
فشَكاso he complained إلَيْكَto you بأَنَّةٍwith a moan وتوجُّعِand pained complaint
فشَكا إلَيْكَ بأَنَّةٍ وتوجُّعِ
the beloved’s cheek, which you bit in a garden;
the beloved's cheek, when you bit it in a garden,
then it complained to you with a moan of pain.
so he complained to you with a moan and a cry of pain.
وكأَنَّمَاand as though خيريُّهَاits wallflower تَحْتَbeneath الدُّجَىthe darkness
وكأَنَّمَا خيريُّهَا تَحْتَ الدُّجَى
بَيْنَamong الأَزَاهِرِthe blossoms قَامَstood كالمُتَطَلِّعِlike an expectant watcher
بَيْنَ الأَزَاهِرِ قَامَ كالمُتَطَلِّعِ
Its gillyflower beneath the darkness seems
And it is as though its wallflower, beneath the darkness,
to stand among the blossoms like one peering out,
stood among the blossoms like an expectant watcher,
يَرْجُوhe hopes for زِيَارَةَa visit مَنthe one whom يُحِبُّhe loves لِوَعْدِهِbecause of his promise
يَرْجُو زِيَارَةَ مَن يُحِبُّ لِوَعْدِهِ
كَلَفاًlove-struck فباتَso he spent the night مُرَاقِباًkeeping watch لمdid not يَهْجَعِsleep
كَلَفاً فباتَ مُرَاقِباً لم يَهْجَعِ
hoping for the promised visit of the one he loves—
hoping for his beloved's promised visit,
love-struck, he kept watch all night and never slept.
love-struck; so he spent the night watching, without sleep.
