نالَتْ سُلَيمان منه رِجْلٌ

نالَتْ سُلَيمان منه رِجْلٌ

مِن قَبْلُ ما أَرْجَلَتْ أَباهُ

مِن قَبْلُ ما أَرْجَلَتْ أَباهُ

A foot of his struck Sulayman,

Sulayman gained from him a leg

Before it unhorsed his father.

Before he made his father limp

فاسْتَدْرجا كاشِفَي دُجاهُ

فاسْتَدْرجا كاشِفَي دُجاهُ

يا ويْلَةَ المرْءِ ما دهاهُ

يا ويْلَةَ المرْءِ ما دهاهُ

So they both lured the two who dispelled his darkness.

So they both summoned the unveilers of darkness

Woe to the man! What has befallen him!

Oh what misery befalls a man despite his cleverness

يا سُخْطَ ربِّ العُلا علَيْهِ

يا سُخْطَ ربِّ العُلا علَيْهِ

إِذْ أَدَّتِ المُرْتَضَى يَدَاهُ

إِذْ أَدَّتِ المُرْتَضَى يَدَاهُ

May the wrath of the Lord on high be upon him,

Oh anger of the Lord Most High upon him

When his hands brought ruin upon al-Murtada.

When the beloved extended her hands

لم يُبْقِ مِن زُمْرةِ المعالِي

لم يُبْقِ مِن زُمْرةِ المعالِي

إِلا هِشامَ العُلا أَخاهُ

إِلا هِشامَ العُلا أَخاهُ

He left none of the company of the illustrious,

None remained of the group of the exalted

Except Hisham of lofty glory, his brother.

Except Hisham the Most High his brother

يا ربِّ فاحْرُسْهُ لِي بعيْنٍ

يا ربِّ فاحْرُسْهُ لِي بعيْنٍ

تَمْنَعُهُ الدَّهْر مِن أَذاهُ

تَمْنَعُهُ الدَّهْر مِن أَذاهُ

O Lord, guard him for me with an eye

Oh Lord, guard him for me with an eye

That shields him forever from his harm.

That protects him from the harms of fate
