تَولَّىwent off الحِمامُdeath بظَبْيwith the gazelle of الخُدُورِthe secluded chambers
وفازَand won الرَّدىdoom بالغَزَالِwith the gazelle الغَرِيرِguileless
Death went off with the gazelle of the secluded chambers,
The dove has turned away from the lovely doe
And doom won the guileless gazelle.
And time has claimed the graceful gazelle
وكُنْتُand I had ملِلْتُكgrown weary of you لاnot عنout of قِلىًaversion
ولاnor عنfrom فَسادٍcorruption جرىarose فيin ضَمِيريmy inner heart
And I had grown weary of you, not out of aversion,
I did not tire of you out of boredom
Nor from corruption that arose in my heart,
Nor because of any corruption within my heart
كمِثْلِlike ملالِthe weariness of الفَتَىa young man للنَّعِيمِof bliss
إِذاwhen دامhe remains فيهin it وحالand a state of السُّرُورِjoy
Like a young man's weariness of bliss,
It was like a young man tiring of pleasure
When he remains in it and in a state of joy.
When joy in him becomes constant
