And the birds of prey know that his champions

are beasts of prey when they meet proud champions.

They drool and quiver in the air

when the clash between armored men grows fierce.

They fly hungry above him, and are sent back

by his sword-edges to their nests, sated.

    فهُنَّ رَقِيقٌ يُشْتَرَى ويُبَاعُ

    Through kindness he gained the halter of their bondage;

so they are slaves to be bought and sold.

And he fed some of their chicks meat, so they are at his command

in every war—and kings are obeyed.

They grapple with the war’s wounded, and their pecking finishes

them off—and noble birds, too, engage in combat.
