فبقلبهfor in his heart نارfire التاسفregret تلقحblazes
Will You, I wonder, pardon what he has committed?
Do you see what wrongs he has committed?
For the fire of regret blazes in his heart.
In his heart burns the fire of regret.
للعفوtoward pardon يجنحinclines فيin الشدائدhardships خاطريmy heart
ولعفوكمand toward Your pardon عندduring الشدائدhardships يجنَحُinclines
My heart inclines toward pardon in hardships,
In times of hardship, my nature inclines to forgiveness.
and toward Your pardon it inclines in hardships.
And in times of hardship, your forgiveness inclines.
ياO ويحwoe to منthe one سترتYou concealed عليهfor him عيوبهhis faults
إنif كانhe is فيon يومthe day of القيامةresurrection يفضحis disgraced
Alas for him whose faults You have concealed,
Woe to him whose faults you concealed!
if on the Day of Resurrection he is disgraced.
If on the Day of Judgment they are exposed.
منwho ليfor me إذاwhen عرضتis presented عليكbefore You جنيّتيmy offense
إنif لمnot تكنYou are ليto me بالتجاوزwith pardon تسمحgrant generously
Who will help me when my offense is laid before You,
If I present my wrongdoings to you,
if You are unwilling to grant me pardon?
who do I have if you do not forgive with kindness?
أترىwould You, I wonder تُعَذّبُtorment مسلماa Muslim ولسانهwhile his tongue

Would You, I wonder, torment a Muslim while his tongue
Do you think you would punish a Muslim whose tongue
openly proclaims the testimony of Your oneness?
Proclaims your Oneness sincerely?
إنif أثقلتweigh down أعباءthe burdens of ذنبٍsin ظهرَهُhis back
فبفضلهاthen through its virtue الأعباءthe burdens عنهfrom him تطرحare cast off
If the burdens of sin weigh down his back,
If the burden of sins weighs down his back,
then through its virtue those burdens are lifted from him.
Then by your grace the burdens are lifted from him.
تاللَهby God لاnever برحceases العميدthe lovesick one بباكمat Your gate
فلغيركمfor toward anyone but You آمالهhis hopes لاnot تطمحaspire
By God, the lovesick one remains at Your gate;
By God, the pillar does not cease weeping,
for his hopes reach toward none but You.
And for none but you do his hopes aspire.

عنكمfrom You حليفone bound to بعادكمseparation from You لاnever يبرحdeparts
So accept him, or drive him away, or keep him far off:
So accept or reject or distance yourself,
the one bound to separation from You will never leave You.
An ally who stays with you when you are distant.

I will surely persist in striving toward You, full of hope,
I will persist seeking you hopefully,
for perhaps my striving will succeed through my steadfastness.
That my persistence in adherence succeeds.
إنindeed الجناةthe sinners إلىtoward رضاكYour approval تعرضواhave sought

Indeed, the sinners have sought Your approval;
The saved have appealed to your pleasure
they stood at the gates of hope and asked that they be opened:
And stood at the gates of hope knocking.

ومتيمand a love-stricken one بالشوقwith longing فيكfor You يصرحspeaks openly
among them a fearful one, whom his sins have brought to ruin,
A fearful one whom his sins have ruined,
and a love-stricken one, openly declaring his longing for You.
And a lover who openly proclaims his passion for you.
فاغفرso forgive لهذاfor this one ماwhat جناهhe committed it وكنand be لذاfor that one
ففؤادهfor his heart بسهامby the arrows of بعدكseparation from You يجرحis wounded
So forgive this one what he has committed, and stand by that one;
So forgive him what wrongs he has done, and be to this one
for his heart is wounded by the arrows of separation from You.
For his heart is wounded by arrows of separation from you.

The tongue is mute, held from speech by awe,
My tongue falls silent from speech in awe,
and my gesture hints at what I desire.
And my gestures signal what I wish.
