When I set the worlds aside,

When I abandoned the two worlds in isolation

And rejected every excuse and interpretation,

And refused all excuses and interpretations

ناديت في نادي الهوى بتذلل

ناديت في نادي الهوى بتذلل

وقف الهوى بي حيث أنت فليس لي

وقف الهوى بي حيث أنت فليس لي

I called out humbly in love's assembly:

I humbly called in the clan of passion

Love held me where you are; I have neither

Passion stopped me where you are, I have no

متأخّر عنه ولا متقدم

متأخّر عنه ولا متقدم

بعصا النوى قد أصبحت موقوذةً

بعصا النوى قد أصبحت موقوذةً

Retreat from it nor advance.

Later or earlier than it

Separation's rod has beaten senseless

With the staff of purpose I have become bewitched

نفسٌ غدت أحشاؤها مجذوذة

نفسٌ غدت أحشاؤها مجذوذة

يا غادراً ترك الضلوع حنيذة

يا غادراً ترك الضلوع حنيذة

A soul whose innards have been severed.

A soul whose insides are pulled out

O faithless one who left my ribs roasted,

O betrayer, you left the ribs broken

أجد الملامة في هواك لذيذة

أجد الملامة في هواك لذيذة

حباً لذكرك فليلمني اللوَمُ

حباً لذكرك فليلمني اللوَمُ

I find reproach for loving you sweet,

I find blaming you is sweet

Out of love for the mention of you—so let the reproachers reproach me.

For love of your mention, so let blame gather me

عجبا عداتي قد تناهى عجبهم

عجبا عداتي قد تناهى عجبهم

لما غدا من عذب وردك شربهم

لما غدا من عذب وردك شربهم

How strange! My enemies' amazement has reached its height,

Strangely, my enemies have exceeded in their wonder

When their drink came from your sweet waters.

When your sweet rose water became their drink

حسنوا بعيني بل سباتي قربهم

حسنوا بعيني بل سباتي قربهم

أشبهت أعدائي فصرت أحبهم

أشبهت أعدائي فصرت أحبهم

They grew fair in my eyes; rather, their nearness is my slumber.

They deemed me good, rather my death brought them near

You resembled my enemies, so I came to love them,

I resembled my enemies and so loved them

إذ صار حظى منك حظى منهم

إذ صار حظى منك حظى منهم

احكم بما ترضى فلست مكابرا

احكم بما ترضى فلست مكابرا

Since my lot from you became my lot from them.

As my fortune from you became their fortune

Rule as you please, for I am not defiant.

Judge with what you wish, I am no adversary

أو ما تراني لاحتكامك صابرا

أو ما تراني لاحتكامك صابرا

أقصيتني إذ لم تجد لي ناصرا

أقصيتني إذ لم تجد لي ناصرا

And do you not see me patiently enduring your judgment?

Or see me, to your judgement I am patient

You cast me away when you found no one to defend me.

You excluded me when you found no helper for me

وأهنتني فأهنت نفسي صاغرا

وأهنتني فأهنت نفسي صاغرا

ما مَن يهون عليك ممن أكرِمُ

ما مَن يهون عليك ممن أكرِمُ

And you abased me, so I abased myself in submission.

And disgraced me, so I lowered myself humbled

No one you hold in contempt is among those I honor.

What is insignificant to you of those I honor
