وقصورُand the palaces of كاظمةٍKazimah خلاءempty بلقعُdesolate
This is al-Aqiq, its bān-trees, and al-Ajraʿ;
This ruby land, its groves and slopes,
And Kazimah's palaces are empty, desolate.
And lofty Kadhimah palaces now lie deserted,
أخنىhas laid waste الزمانtime علىupon مغانىthe dwellings of ربعهاits encampment
ياO حرّburning heat ماwhat تطوىare folded عليهaround it الأضلعthe ribs
Time has laid waste the dwellings of its encampment.
Time has mourned over the meanings of its expanse,
Oh, the burning heat of what the ribs enfold!
O burning grief! What sorrows hearts endure!
خدىmy cheek عليهاover them خددتهhave furrowed it مدامعيmy tears
ياO ويحwoe to خدىmy cheek خددتهhave furrowed it الأدمعthe tears
My tears over them have furrowed my cheek;
My tears have carved their channels on its cheeks,
Alas for my cheek, furrowed by tears!
Alas! The channels carved by tears that poured!

By God, how saddening are the dwellings of a spring encampment,
What piercing sadness in these palace ruins
Whose landmarks the four winds have woven over!
That four winds built and obliterated!
تلكthose الربوعabodes وإنeven though تطاولhas grown long عهدهاthe time since them
فلهاso for them بقلبىin my heart حسرةٌsorrow وتوجعand aching
Those abodes, though their days are long past,
Though long gone are those lands,
Still leave sorrow and aching in my heart.
In my heart remains the sorrow and the pain,
ماhow كانwas أرغدَblissful عيشlife أيامdays بهاin them
سلفتhave passed ووقتand time بالمسرةin delight يقطعis spent
How blissful was life in the days there,
Never again such pleasure will I know
Now past, with time spent in delight!
As we once shared in happiness complete,
إذwhen كانwas روضthe garden of العيشlife غضاfresh يانعاflourishing
ولناand for us مقيلٌa noonday resting-place فيin ذراهits shelter ومربعand a spring encampment
When life's garden was fresh and flourishing,
When life's meadow shone fresh and bloomed,
And in its shelter we had a noonday resting-place and a spring encampment.
And we had restful shade and sweet retreat.
فالآنso now قدindeed حكمdecreed الزمانtime ببينناour parting
ونعىand announced mournfully بفرقتناour separation الغرابthe crow الأبقعthe pied
So now time has decreed our parting,
Now time has judged and come between us,
And the pied crow has mournfully announced our separation.
Parting is heralded by the motley crow.
أترىdo you think تعودwill return لناto us ليالٍnights قدalready مضتhave passed
هيهاتfar from it ماnot فيin ردbringing back ذلكthat مطمعُhope
Do you think nights gone by will return to us?
Can those sweet bygone nights return?
Far from it! There is no hope of bringing that back.
Alas! No hope of that remains!
ياO نادبmourner of الأطلالthe ruins ويحكalas for you كمhow long ترىwill you gaze
والجفنُand the eyelid دامbleeding والفؤادand the heart مصدَعُshattered
O mourner of the ruins, alas for you—how long will you gaze,
O you who mourn the ruins, enough!
While your eyelid bleeds and your heart is shattered?
Though tears flow on and heart is wracked with pain,
دعleave off ندبlamenting ربعan abode دارسeffaced وارحلand journey إلىto
أرضa land بهاin it نورthe light of النبوةprophethood يسطعshines brightly
Leave off lamenting a ruined abode, and journey to
Leave the abandoned camp, set out instead
A land where the light of prophethood shines.
For land where the Light of Truth does shine,

So your desire is a watering-place of sweet water, whose coolness
Where you will find clear running waters
Heals the burning ache of your thirst and quenches it.
To cleanse heart’s thirst and heal spirit’s bane.
ياO سائليyou who ask me عنabout أرضthe land of طيبةTaybah إنهاindeed, it is

O you who ask me about the land of Taybah: it is
O you who ask of blessed land, it is
A horizon where the sun of noble virtues rises.
The horizon where the Sun of Glory rose,

فبكلso in every نادassembly-place منfrom سناهاtheir radiance مطلعُa rising-place
Glory has celestial spheres that have shone in Yathrib;
For honor, Yathrib’s orbits glow,
So in every assembly is a rising-place for their radiance.
And every clan therein has noble roots.
لوif كانwere ليfor me حولstrength أتيتI would visit ربوعهاits abodes
لكنbut ماwhat قدindeed شاءhas willed ربيmy Lord يصنعHe brings about
If I had the strength, I would visit its abodes,
Had I the means I would revisit it,
But my Lord brings about what He has willed.
But God alone what will be done, decrees.

ماباتas long as it spends the night غريدthe songbird of الأراكthe arak trees يسجعwarbles
So greetings to the dwellings at al-Aqiq,
Greet ruby land for me, though we now part,
As long as the arak's songbird warbles through the night.
Where still sweet-throated birds their songs trill.
