صدعتshattered فؤاديmy heart وقفةa pause التوديعfarewell
ماwhat للنوىfor separation ولقلبيand for my heart المصدوعshattered
The moment of farewell shattered my heart.
The farewell stance has shattered my heart,
What does separation want with my shattered heart?
What is destined for my soul and broken heart?
ودعتهمI bade them farewell سحراًbefore dawn وأدمعand the tears مقلتيmy eye
ممزوجةٌmingled أمواههاtheir waters بنجيعwith blood
I bade them farewell before dawn, with tears from my eye
I bid them farewell at dawn as my eyelids wept,
whose waters were mingled with blood.
Their waters intermingled with bitter tears.
ماليwhat have I وللبينand with separation المثتّrending (reading uncertain) أماhas it not اشتفىfound satisfaction
مماfrom what جناهit inflicted it وساعةand the hour of التشييعseeing off
What have I to do with rending separation? Has it not been sated
What is it to me, the prolonged separation? Will I find solace
by what it wrought, and by the hour of seeing them off?
From what it has yielded and the funeral procession?
لوif أبصرتsaw عيناكyour two eyes حاليmy condition بعدهمafter them
لأسفتyou would have grieved منat اسفىmy sorrow وذلand the abasement of خضوعيmy submission
Had your eyes seen my condition after they left,
If your eyes could see my state after they left,
you would have grieved at my sorrow and my abject submission.
You would pity the most pitiful and my humility.
إنindeed النوىseparation حكمتruled علىupon me بجورهاwith its tyranny
جورُthe tyranny of النوىseparation أذكىkindled لهيبthe flame of ضلوعيmy ribs
Indeed, separation has ruled over me with its tyranny;
Indeed, destiny has wronged me with its tyranny,
separation's tyranny kindled the flame within my ribs.
The tyranny of destiny stokes the flames in my ribs.
عجباًhow strange أتدعونيdoes it call me النوىseparation فأجيبهاand so I answer it
هلّاwhy not عصيتI disobeyed وكنتand I was غيرnot مطيعobedient
How strange! Does separation call me, and I answer it?
How strange you call me, oh destiny, and I answer,
Why did I not rebel and refuse to obey?
Why did I not disobey and cease to comply?
أرسلتI sent دمعىmy tears للنوىto separation متشفعاseeking intercession
لوif only أنهاthat it قبلتaccepted ذمامthe pledge of شفيعan intercessor
I sent my tears to separation, seeking intercession—
I sent my tears to destiny pleading
if only it had honored an intercessor's pledge.
That it may accept the intercession of an advocate.
لوif أنthat قلبكyour heart يومon the day بانواthey departed سُحرةًbefore dawn
صخرrock لذابit would have melted لرقةat the tenderness of التوديعfarewell
Had your heart, on the day they left before dawn,
If your heart the day they left at dawn
been rock, it would have melted at the tenderness of farewell.
Was a rock, it would melt from the gentleness of farewell.
ماnot كنتI was أحسبI thought أنthat بيناًa parting كائناًoccurring
كلاno indeed ولمand did not أشعرI sense لهfor it بوقوعof occurrence
I never thought that parting would occur.
I did not expect that separation would exist between us,
No, nor did I sense that it would happen,
No, I was not aware it would occur.
حتىuntil أصيبَwas struck القلبthe heart يومon the day of وداعهمtheir farewell
سحراًbefore dawn بسهمby an arrow للفؤادto the heart مريعterrifying
until my heart was struck on the day of their farewell,
Until the day I bid them farewell at dawn,
before dawn, by an arrow that terrified the heart.
My heart was struck by an arrow, painful to my soul.
قدindeed كدتI nearly يومon the day of فراقهمtheir parting أفنىI perish اسىgrief
لولاwere it not for التأسىtaking solace منهمfrom them برجوعin a return
I nearly perished of grief on the day they parted,
The day they left, I almost perished from sorrow,
but for the solace of their hoped-for return.
If not for hoping they would return.

O Lord, hasten their return, with
Oh Lord, bring their return closer,
perfect ease and gracious favor.
To complete easing and good favor.

What he desires of the sinner and compliant.

And grant him victory, aid him, and decree for his followers
And give him victory, support him, and decree for his party
lasting might, unassailable and impregnable.
An enduring glory that cannot be attained forcefully.
