فيذكر أوطانا بها ألف الصبا
The ardent lover's passion stirs when the east wind blows,
Love of the beloved stirs when the breeze blows,
and he recalls homelands where he knew his youth.
Recalling homelands where youth was spent.

بريق اللوى أن تسكب الدمع طيبا
The lovesick one's eye is pledged, if there flickers
A gaze promising the lover some solace,
a gleam from al-Liwa, to shed tears willingly.
If the glittering eyes would shed a tender tear.

متى يرد الظمآن في الرى مشربا
O haunt of loved ones, while the lover is far away,
O sanctuary of loved ones and youth now departed,
when will the thirsty one reach a watering-place to slake his thirst?
When will the thirsty find watering holes to drink?

O home of Salma, we're now far apart,
when will time draw a tormented lover near to you?
When will time bring you near, tormenting my youth?

وإن جنت الظلماء سامر كوكبا
He exchanges songs with gray doves in the pre-dawn hours,
At dawn, doves scatter their paper petals,
and if darkness falls, he keeps a star company through the night.
Though darkness conceals the evensong star.

Nor is it strange that his sorrow lingers on the ridge,
No wonder grief persists in this meadow,
now that they are absent from the ridge's open ground.
Since all have vanished from this meadow.

ركبنا بها للأنس واللهو مركبا
To God belong al-Muhassab's landmarks! How often, how often
By God, how many encampments we knew,
we took a ride there for companionship and amusement!
Where we rode for joy and play.

Haunts that were familiar gathering-places for maidens—
Sanctuaries where we were intimate friends,
oh, how delightful life was there, and how sweet!
O sweetest life once lived within them!

فأصبحت لا أبغى سوى العز مطلبا
There I once had dwellings and fertile pasture,
Revels and music were mine there,
but now I seek no goal except honor.
Now I crave only honor and repute.

لأن عذار الخد أصبح أشيبا
I drew in the reins of my gaze after its unruliness,
I've reined in my roving eyes,
because the hair along my cheek has turned gray.
For the cheeks of my love have grayed.

My mind apparently turned away from union with Sa'da and Zaynab,
Begone my heart from Sa'di and Zainab,
for I have been told news from Saba.
For I'm forewarned of Saba's tidings.

I shall set my riding camels journeying toward my loved ones,
I will sail my ships for dear ones
and traverse sea and path in pursuit of lofty honors.
And cross a sea for great deeds.

For I have glimpsed a lightning flash from the direction of Yathrib,
For from Yathrib's horizon dawned a flash,
and my life has grown sweet and fruitful through the Beloved.
Blessing my life with the beloved's grace.

Behold, marvel: a heart has journeyed eastward,
Marvel that a heart roams east
and left behind a body that had settled in the west.
While a body settled in the west.

Who, then, will tell my loved ones on my behalf that I have
Inform my loved ones that I have
a heart set ablaze by the fire of longing?
A heart aflame with ardent longing.

The caravan's singing camel-driver, traveling by night, reminds me of
When my companions recall me on their night journey,
doves of ban trees that have settled on fertile ground.
I'm disturbed like doves in leafy bowers.

And the mention of al-Aqiq thrills me, so I sway,
The thought of carnelian excites me, till I sway
as though I were a branch tugged by the hand of the east wind.
Like a branch pulled by the hand of youth.

O dawn breeze, convey regards that grew
a greeting of peace, like the scent blossoms waft upon the hills,
Like flowers nourished by the rain.

To the pure, the most pious, the exalted Muhammad,

And his lofty companions in glorious stations.
