O abode of Taybah, separation is frightening.
O pleasant home, and distance is frightening
My patience with distance from the dwellings is weak.
My patience for being away from home is weak
منwho ليfor me بأنthat أحظىI may be blessed بربعwith an abode of مكارمnoble virtues
من لي بأن أحظى بربع مكارم
صرفتturned عنانيmy reins عنaway from لقاهmeeting it صروفturns of fate
صرفت عناني عن لقاه صروف
Who will help me gain an abode of noble virtues?
Who can help me gain some generosity
The turns of fate have turned my reins away from reaching it.
My circumstances have diverted me from meeting it
كمhow often أشتكيI lament مولايmy lord بعداًa distance قاطعاًsevering
كم أشتكي مولاي بعداً قاطعاً
يعدوassails علىupon ضعفىmy weakness وأنتwhile you رؤوفcompassionate
يعدو على ضعفى وأنت رؤوف
How often I lament, my lord, a severing distance
How I complain to my Master of a cutting separation
that assails my weakness, while you are compassionate.
That runs over my weakness while You are Kind
صرفتwas directed إلىtoward نيلattaining الأمانيthe wishes حلبةa band of racers
صرفت إلى نيل الأماني حلبة
والعبدand the servant عنfrom دركattaining المنىthe desires مصروفturned away
والعبد عن درك المنى مصروف
A band of racers was directed toward attaining wishes,
You have diverted me to strive for my wishes
while the servant is turned away from attaining his desires.
While Your servant is diverted from attaining his goal
لاdo not تحرمنيdeprive me of نيلattaining ماwhat قدalready أدركواthey attained
لا تحرمني نيل ما قد أدركوا
فعليكfor upon you مأمولwhat is hoped for الرجاhope موقوفdependent
فعليك مأمول الرجا موقوف
Do not deny me the attainment of what they have attained,
Do not deprive me of attaining what they have attained
for the object of hope depends on you.
For hope in You is where wishes are pinned
أمضواthey carried out عزائمهمtheir resolves وأخرand delayed دمعتيmy tear
أمضوا عزائمهم وأخر دمعتي
عنfrom دركattaining ماwhat قدalready أدركواthey attained التسويفprocrastination
عن درك ما قد أدركوا التسويف
They carried out their resolves, while my tear was held back
They accomplished their resolves while my tears
from attaining what they attained—by procrastination.
Are diverted from attaining what procrastination attained
كيفhow اللحاقcatching up بهمwith them وأنتwhile you كماas ترىyou see
كيف اللحاق بهم وأنت كما ترى
بالغدرfor betrayal ياO حلفsworn ally of الوناlassitude معروفknown
بالغدر يا حلف الونا معروف
How can you catch up with them when you, as you see,
How can I catch up with them while You see
are known for betrayal, O sworn ally of lassitude?
That time, O oath of intimacy, is known for betrayal
وصفواthey were described بأوصافby qualities of الوفاfaithfulness وبضدهاand by their opposite
وصفوا بأوصاف الوفا وبضدها
أنتyou المشارthe one indicated إليهto him والموصوفand the one described
أنت المشار إليه والموصوف
They were described by qualities of faithfulness; by their opposites,
They were described with traits of loyalty yet the opposite
you are the one singled out and described.
You are the one indicated and described
شغفواthey were passionately devoted ببذلto exerting الجدearnest effort فيin نيلattaining المنىthe desires
شغفوا ببذل الجد في نيل المنى
فسَمواso they rose high وأنتwhile you بضدwith the opposite of ذاthis مشغوفenamored
فسَموا وأنت بضد ذا مشغوف
They were passionately devoted to earnest effort in attaining desires,
They were passionate about exerting effort to attain their wishes
so they rose high, while you are enamored of the opposite.
And so they attained while You are passionate for the opposite
قدّرواthey measured القوادمthe primary wing-feathers عنbeyond مدىthe range of دركattaining الدناworldly things
قدّروا القوادم عن مدى درك الدنا
ولظلهاand for their shade مدتwere stretched عليكover you سجوفcurtains
ولظلها مدت عليك سجوف
They measured their flight feathers beyond the range of worldly attainment,
They estimated the future through attaining the present
while curtains were drawn over you in their shadow.
While its shadow was extended in submission to You
حتىuntil متىwhen لاnot ترعوىyou mend your ways بعتابناat our reproach
حتى متى لا ترعوى بعتابنا
وغلىand until (apparent typo) متىwhen لاnot ينفعis effective التعنيفstern rebuke
وغلى متى لا ينفع التعنيف
How long will you fail to mend your ways at our reproach?
Until when will You not heed our reproach
And how long will stern rebuke prove useless?
And until when will reprimand not benefit
أعرضتyou turned away عناfrom us إذwhen غدرتyou betrayed تجافياin estrangement
أعرضت عنا إذ غدرت تجافيا
وجنافناand our estrangement أبداًalways عليكtoward you عطوفtender
وجنافنا أبداً عليك عطوف
You turned away from us when you betrayed us, keeping aloof,
You turned away when You betrayed, being aloof
yet our estrangement is ever tender toward you.
Yet our affection for You is always kind
فانهضso arise إليناtoward us والتزمand cling to أبوابناour gates
فانهض إلينا والتزم أبوابنا
فالقربfor nearness أمنsafety والبعادand separation مخيفfrightening
فالقرب أمن والبعاد مخيف
So rise toward us and cling to our gates,
So rise to us and stick to our doors
for nearness is safety, and separation is frightening.
For closeness is safety, and distance is frightening
