هلis there? فيamong الرياحthe winds إلىto الحبيبthe beloved رسولa messenger
فالقلبfor the heart مضنىworn out والفؤادand the heart عليلailing
Is there among the winds a messenger to the beloved?
Is there for my love a messenger in the winds?
For the heart is worn out, and the heart is ailing.
For my heart is distressed and my soul is ill
باللَهby God ياO ريحwind ابلغيtell أهلthe people الحمىof the sanctuary
أنthat الجوانحthe ribs حشوهنwhat fills them غليلburning longing
By God, O wind, tell the people of the sanctuary
By God, O breeze, tell the people of the valley
that the ribs are filled with burning longing.
That their breasts are filled with anguish
ياO نازحينdistant ones وفيand in الفؤادthe heart خيالهمtheir image
أمدthe time اللقاof reunion هلis there? ليfor me إليهto it سبيلa way
O distant ones, whose image dwells in the heart,
O you who move on while their image is in my heart
the time of reunion—is there a way for me to reach it?
Is there for me a way to meet them?
ماwhat ليfor me أرىI see غيريsomeone other than me يفوزwins بقربكمnearness to you
ووصالكمand union with you ماnot ليfor me إليهto it وصولaccess
Why do I see others win nearness to you,
Why do I see others gain your nearness
yet I have no way to attain union with you?
While I cannot attain union with you?

يبغىhe seeks القرىhospitality منfrom نيلكمyour bounty فأنيلواso bestow
This guest of yours has come to your door,
Seeking shelter with you, so grant me refuge
seeking hospitality from your bounty; so bestow it.
He has pitched his tent in the courtyards,
أضحىhe has become بساحاتin the grounds الخيامof the tents مخيماencamped
يشكوhe laments وشكوىand the lament المستهارof one maddened by love تطولlasts long
He is now encamped in the grounds around the tents,
Complaining, while the complaints of the sleepless grow long
lamenting, and the lament of one maddened by love runs long.
His heart has become accustomed to passions, so his condition
ألفhas grown used to الشحونthe burdens فؤادهhis heart فشعارهso his refrain
لماwhen هجرتمyou deserted أنةa groan وعويلand wailing
His heart has grown used to burdens; so his refrain,
Is crying and wailing since you left
since you deserted him, is groaning and wailing.
The music makes him sway happily

طرباًin rapture وتثنيهand bends him الصباthe east wind فيميلso he sways
A tremor visits him in the late afternoons,
And the morning breeze makes him incline
in rapture; the east wind bends him, and he sways.
The traces of the departed urge him on
تشجيهsadden him آثارtraces الطلولof deserted dwellings إذاwhen بدتthey appear
وتهيجهand stirs him عندat الصباحmorning هديلcooing
The traces of deserted dwellings sadden him when they appear,
And the sounds of morning rouse him
and a dove's cooing stirs him in the morning.
His nights have grown long, so his suffering is long
طالتhave grown long لياليهhis nights فطالso has lengthened عناؤهhis suffering
وكذاكand likewise ليلthe night المستهامof the love-stricken طويلlong
His nights have lengthened, and so has his suffering;
And the night of the sleepless is indeed long
and likewise, the night of the love-stricken is long.
He weeps for the sanctuaries whose traces are holy
يبكىhe weeps over معالمlandmarks قدستhave been hallowed آثارهاtheir traces
فمتىso when يتاحwill be granted لهto him بهنamong them مقيلa midday resting-place
He weeps over landmarks whose traces are hallowed;
When will he be allowed to rest in them?
so when will he be granted a midday resting-place among them?
How much has he wept in the garden of delight, seeking pleasure
كمhow often بكthrough you فيin روضthe garden الرضاof contentment يجنىhe reaps المنىwishes
ولأنسكمand your companionship has ظلa shade عليهover him ظليلdeep
How often, through you, he reaped wishes in the garden of contentment,
While their shade was merciful to him
and your companionship cast a deep shade over him,
Until the hand of separation flung an arrow

until the hand of separation shot at him, and he was struck
That distance aims straight to the heart
by a deadly arrow aimed by distance.
