    I squandered the days of youth’s prime, and now

    in old age I weep for what I squandered.

    Alas for me! Consolation is hard to find; what, then,

    can I do? And will what has passed of my life return?

    I have grown too weak for the racecourse—oh, the regret!

    So today I neither go to water nor return from it.

    وخانني أملى في سابق القدر

    The lightly burdened have won nearness to them, O my soul;

    and my hope betrayed me in what fate had already decreed.

    I was kept far from them—alas, my grief!—while they drew near.

    What is my story among them—woe to me—and what news of me?

    If no communion with them is granted, what

    can my fear or caution avail when they forsake me?

    يا عين سحى دماً قد عيل مصطبري

    O soul, melt in sorrow over what you have missed of them;

    O eye, pour forth blood; my endurance is already spent.

    Give back the nights of my days that have passed

    away from me, that I might fulfill my desire in them.

    Your bounty toward me is your kindness,

    when I turned my gaze toward you in hope.

    فلتأخذوا بيدي إني على خطر

    And before you I have renounced my own devices in this matter;

    so take me by the hand, for I am in danger.

    Were it not for my clinging to the cords of hope and wishes,

    my soul would have departed from agonizing impatience.

    And I have no recourse to place my hope in but tears,

    whose downpour streams along my cheek like rain.

    If you grant me the closing of the distance from you,

    then I shall triumph in attaining safety and victory.
