Morning raised the banner of dawn,

so what was concealed of my secret came to light.

If you are searching for secrets,

then inhale, friend, the fragrant breath of the predawn hours.

And prolong the invocations in the late afternoons,

for they are more fragrant than sweet-scented blossoms.

What are musk's perfume or the scent of blossoms

beside remembrance's fragrance in the darkness of [night]?

Ah, for my tears and for my sorrow!

See how the shock of parting wastes away

a yearning lover's [body], his eyelids bleeding.

You who reproach me over them—leave me alone!

My tears pour down like rain,

and my heart blazes upon the embers.

Longing has wasted me; mend my brokenness.

The day you left the two precincts of Salʿ,

    streaming tears furrowed my cheek.

If you visit the lover distraught with anguish,

his hardship will be exchanged for ease,

and good fortune will [come to him] with glad tidings.

The servant cannot do without you.

Separation has indeed worn me thin and wasted me.

Who will aid a lover whom longing has melted away?

[He spent the night] singing in the grove of his sorrow.

    فالطفوا بي وأمّنوا ذعري

    My life has indeed been spent in loving you;

so be gentle with me and allay my terror.

    فأجر من ضنى النوى قلبي

    My master, you are the lovesick one's refuge;

so shield my heart from separation's wasting sickness.

[If] you are mine, or [if] you are enough for me,

I sing of you in the words of one filled with pride:

Trail your hem as much as you please,

and link your thanks to further thanks.
