    إليه إشتياقي كل حين يجدّد

    In Taybah is an abode of lofty virtues and a shrine;

    my yearning for it is renewed at every moment.

    Ah, is there a grieving soul whom parting and sorrow have wasted,

    whom I may console in his sorrow, and who may console me?

    For in the heart is a fire, scorching in its heat and blaze,

    kindled and set aflame with fragments of my livers,

    over the remoteness of those lands and their great distance,

    and an age that offers no help in what I seek.

    فهل عطفة يدنى بها اليوم مبعَدُ

    Most of my life has passed in distance and separation;

    is there, then, some kindness to draw one kept afar near today?

    يقرب غيري للحبيب وأبعد

    Alas, my grief! I have melted away with longing and anguish;

    another is brought near the beloved, while I am kept away.

    And every year comes a resolve to head toward their land,

    yet fate's decrees bring near and send far away.

    ودمعي وأجفاني بذلك يشهد

    You see me in my longing for the beloved and his grave;

    and my tears and eyelids bear witness to that.

    فدمعي مسفوح وقلبي مكمد

    I try to draw near, but destiny keeps me away;

    so my tears pour forth, and my heart is grief-stricken.

    When will the days grant me a visit someday,

    so that a goal I hope for may be fulfilled for me?

    بها كان للأحباب رسم ومعهد

    May the rainclouds' morning showers water the soil of landmarks

    where the loved ones once had a trace and a familiar haunt;

    and may they greet Yathrib, despite the distance of the lands—

    the soil where Muhammad, the best of creation, dwelt.
