whenever the south wind wafts by night from the land of Najd.

then torrents of tears pour down from my eyelids.

My time in these lands has dragged on, and now

my tears spill down my cheek in my grief.

Who, then, will bear a greeting to Wadi al-Aqiq,

as sweetly fragrant as a waft of unsealed musk?

O driver of the caravans, be gentle in their pace:

for I have a burning thirst, its flame between my ribs,

distance and the one she reveres have melted the life still left in her.

though her pallor has already made her plight plain.

at the familiar site of your dwelling, her sobbing grows long.

her misfortunes have struck her with the arrow of your departure.

yet her healer is found in kissing the dust of al-Ghawr.

And how can she survive in the abodes of exile,

while her beloved now dwells in Yathrib?

Upon Yathrib be a greeting, as long as lightning flashes,

like a garden's breath, spreading fragrance as it wafts.
