I see you distraught around the tribe’s tents,

bewildered, gesturing to us, frightened and trembling.

You weep and lament to us what you have wrought, and you have

brought on a grievous calamity when you forsook us.

You went far from us, having resolved to forsake us,

though we had intended neither estrangement nor weariness.

Was it when you failed to find, in the tents of their tribe,

a living soul, or hospitality in the abodes of favor,

that you came to us, seeking refuge in grace, stumbling in

the trailing skirts of estrangement’s humiliation, tearful and ashamed?

We surely accept whoever comes to us, despite

whatever faults he may have, and we forgive missteps.

Is it not a disgrace for one to whom we have offered

our affection to be seen rejoicing in someone else?

How often we have called you to goodness, to honor you,

and how often we have sent you letters and messengers!

If you return to faithfulness, we shall return to you; and if

you betray us, you are among those content with weariness.

How many an abashed seeker at our gates

pours out his sorrows and complains of his afflictions,

yet has not plucked the blossoms of the garden of nearness—no, nor

drunk from our cups, a second draught or a first!

And you are branded with treachery, yet at

times the face of favor calls to you imploringly.

Rise and seize an opportunity, if you have discernment,

and spring up, for the tribe’s watchman has grown heedless.
