Perhaps you will show tenderness, or take pity on my weakness.

For if you will not be tender toward me, alas for my anguish!

And the tears of my eyelids betray what I conceal.

I concealed my ardent longings and hid my sigh,

Yet my gaze laid bare the anguish I had concealed.

And the noble have always shown tenderness to their allies.

And how often you have restored the ruined with kindness!

So spare what life remains, and rescue me with kindness.

On your forbearance alone I have fixed my soul's hopes,

For you are my refuge in all I hope for.

For in your nearness is my safety, and in your distance my fear.

Can I resolve, while fate's decrees rub my nose in the dust?

So, through my frailty and weakness, I have sunk into abasement.

If, despite the distance, you have tenderness for me,

Then my hand has secured good fortune, O my lord.

Otherwise, now that you are far away, I have no recourse

Save a tear from an eye that never sleeps for love of you.

Perhaps the breezes of bounty from the garden of favor

Will waft, sweet-scented, toward the forsaken one.
