When lightning flashes gleam at eventide,

one possessed by longing remembers, and a yearning lover sighs.

I grieved at time, which came between me and them,

nor had I thought that hindrances would hold me back.

    My close companions departed for the land of Ṭaybah;

is there, then, a road for me to that abode?

Indeed, the drivers of their camels shattered my heart,

that evening when she-camels set off bearing the howdahs.

so that souls yearning for the beloved may be healed?

How often you have shared drink with the bright stars in longing,

with no wine but the tears of the eyelids.

And to God belongs a heart scorched by separation,

and an eye's pupil drowned in tears.

Redoubled greetings of peace upon those domed tents,

as musk blended with ʿabīr perfume gives out its scent.
