ولَّىhas passed شبابyouth بالزمانwith the time الصالحgood
ولَّى شباب بالزمان الصالح
Alas for what my breast conceals!
How I regret what my wings have become
Youth has passed, along with the good times.
Youth has passed with time's suitable flow
ساعاتhours تجرٍtrade قدalready تصرّمhas ended وقتهاtheir time
ساعات تجرٍ قد تصرّم وقتها
ماnot كنتI was فيin أسواقهاtheir markets بالرابحa gainer
ما كنت في أسواقها بالرابح
Hours of trade—their time has run out;
Hours drift by, their time is through
I was no gainer in their markets.
In their markets I was no winner, it's true
ضيعتهاI squandered them جهلاًin ignorance وماand not تضييعهاsquandering them
ضيعتها جهلاً وما تضييعها
منamong فعلthe acts of ذيone possessing عقلa mind سليمsound راجحdiscerning
من فعل ذي عقل سليم راجح
I squandered them in ignorance, and squandering them is not
Wasted through ignorance, not its pursuit
the act of one with a sound, discerning mind.
No act of a sane mind with intellect astute
واهاalas! لقلبfor a heart نائمٍasleep متكاسلٍsluggish
واها لقلب نائمٍ متكاسلٍ
سكرانdrunk منfrom خمرthe wine of التغافلِwillful heedlessness طافحdrunk to excess
سكران من خمر التغافلِ طافح
Alas for a slumbering, sluggish heart,
Alas for a heart asleep and lazy
Drunk to excess on the wine of willful heedlessness;
Drunk on the wine of disregard so hazy
قلبٍa heart علىupon طرقthe paths of الغوايةerror عاكفٍdevoted
قلبٍ على طرق الغواية عاكفٍ
أبداًforever وعنand away from سبُلthe ways of المصالحbeneficial pursuits نازحfar removed
أبداً وعن سبُل المصالح نازح
A heart devoted to the paths of error,
A heart set on the path of going astray
Forever, and far removed from the ways of good.
Ever avoiding the road to gainful way
ياO ربLord عطفاًkindness منكfrom You يجبُرُهُmends it ويهand gui-
يا رب عطفاً منك يجبُرُهُ ويه
ديه-des it لنهجto the course of طريقa path of رشدright guidance واضحclear
ديه لنهج طريق رشد واضح
O Lord, grant kindness from You that mends it and guides
Oh Lord, your mercy grant it repair
it along the course of a clear path of right guidance.
Guide it to the path of guidance so clear
