Why do I see you distraught and sorrowful,

worn at heart, having grown accustomed to sorrows?

Indeed, I think you have broken solemn pledges.

Have you accepted breaking the covenant as a creed—woe to you?

So make your eyelids sore with tears of remorse,

for how many years you have persisted in defiance!

And give your days remorse and lamentation,

    and anguish, pain, and longing.

And salvage what remains of your passing life, for

you have squandered a precious treasure, O ignorant one.

And weep for a soul—precious, if you only knew—

and make flowing tears its helper.

It is no wonder that the pouring of tears heals

an ailment that has come to lie buried within the heart.

Think well of them, and cling to their doors,

and make a deep sigh and a moan your emblem.

Do not despair, for their compassion may yet call out:

“Indeed, we have pardoned you and are pleased.”
