The love-worn one grew accustomed to sorrows,

And embraced grief as his creed.

فوق صفح الوجنتين

أهمل الدمع الهتونا

أهمل الدمع الهتونا

Across the surface of his cheeks,

He let copious tears fall.

يقطعُ الأيّام حزنا

يقطعُ الأيّام حزنا

وبكاء وعويلا

وبكاء وعويلا

He passes his days in sorrow,

And weeping and wailing.

فارحمو صبّا معَنّى

فارحمو صبّا معَنّى

قلبُهُ يذكى غليلا

قلبُهُ يذكى غليلا

So have mercy on a tormented lover,

Whose heart blazes with burning longing.

ملهب الأحشاء مضنى

ملهب الأحشاء مضنى

بالنوى أضحى عليلا

بالنوى أضحى عليلا

With innards aflame, he is worn out,

Through separation he has grown ill.

ذاب شوقا وحنينا

ذاب شوقا وحنينا

وسقاماً وأنينا

وسقاماً وأنينا

He melted with longing and yearning,

And with sickness and groaning.

يا له من حلف بين

يرتضى فيك المنونا

يرتضى فيك المنونا

Ah, what a sworn ally of separation,

Who gladly accepts death for your sake!

أترى عهداً تقضّى

أترى عهداً تقضّى

منكم لي هل يعودُ

منكم لي هل يعودُ

Do you think a bygone pledge

From you to me will ever return?

فمتى عنى ترضى

فمتى عنى ترضى

قد برى جسمي الصدود

قد برى جسمي الصدود

So when will you be pleased with me?

Rejection has wasted my body away.

لم أطق واللَه نهضا

لم أطق واللَه نهضا

فبحَقّ الحبَ جودوا

فبحَقّ الحبَ جودوا

I could not rise, by God.

So, for love's sake, be generous.

وارحموا صبا مهينا

وارحموا صبا مهينا

كم شكا البين سنينا

كم شكا البين سنينا

And have mercy on an abased lover.

How many years he has lamented separation!

وشئون المقلَتَينِ

وشئون المقلَتَينِ

تسكُبُ الدمع المعينا

تسكُبُ الدمع المعينا

And the tear ducts of his eyes

Pour forth a flowing stream of tears.

قد ذوى غصن شبابي

قد ذوى غصن شبابي

ومضى عمري ووَلّى

ومضى عمري ووَلّى

The branch of my youth has withered.

And my life has passed and fled.

آن لي وقت الإيابِ

آن لي وقت الإيابِ

كم أمنى النفس جهلا

كم أمنى النفس جهلا

The time has come for me to return.

How often, in ignorance, I fill my soul with hopes!

هذه عرس المتاب

هذه عرس المتاب

في قبابِ الوصلِ تجلى

في قبابِ الوصلِ تجلى

This is the bride of repentance,

Unveiled within the domes of union.

حسّنوا فيها الظنونا

حسّنوا فيها الظنونا

وادخلوها آمنينا

وادخلوها آمنينا

Hold good expectations there,

And enter them in safety.

قد غفرنا كلّ مينِ

قد غفرنا كلّ مينِ

وعفَونا ورضينا

وعفَونا ورضينا

We have forgiven every falsehood,

And we have pardoned and are well pleased.

نحو هانيك الربوع

نحو هانيك الربوع

فاجهدوا كدّ الحمول

فاجهدوا كدّ الحمول

Toward those abodes,

So strive to drive the laden mounts onward.

وإلى قبر الشفيع

وإلى قبر الشفيع

فاعملوا سير الرحيل

فاعملوا سير الرحيل

And toward the Intercessor's tomb,

So undertake the journey of departure.

إن تكُنِ خلّي مطيعي

إن تكُنِ خلّي مطيعي

يمّمَن خيرَ رسولِ

يمّمَن خيرَ رسولِ

If, my friend, you are obedient to me,

Make for the best of messengers.

كن لي يا ربّ معينا

كن لي يا ربّ معينا

وصلِ الصب الحَزينا

وصلِ الصب الحَزينا

Be my helper, O Lord,

And grant union to the sorrowful lover,

قبل أن يحين حيني

قبل أن يحين حيني

وأرى الموت يقينا

وأرى الموت يقينا

Before my appointed hour arrives,

And I behold death with certainty.

نمّ ريحانُ التدانى

نمّ ريحانُ التدانى

وسرَت ريح الوصالِ

وسرَت ريح الوصالِ

The basil of nearness has given forth its scent,

And the breeze of union has wafted by.

قد صفا وردُ الأماني

قد صفا وردُ الأماني

فانتهض إلى المعالي

فانتهض إلى المعالي

The draught of hopes has grown clear,

So rise toward noble heights.

صاح كم هذا التوانى

صاح كم هذا التوانى

فاستمع عذبَ المقال

فاستمع عذبَ المقال

Friend, how long will this delay last?

So listen to the sweetness of speech:

قد بلينا وابتلينا

قد بلينا وابتلينا

واش يقول الناس فينا

واش يقول الناس فينا

We have been worn down and put to the test.

And what are people saying about us?

قم بنا يا نور عيني

قم بنا يا نور عيني

نجعل الشك يقينا

نجعل الشك يقينا

Rise with us, O light of my eye,

We shall turn doubt into certainty.
