The breeze's passage before dawn stirs my sorrow,

And the doves' song among the boughs undoes me.

And sorrow, roses, and wallflowers revive me,

And daisies with wild roses take me captive.

And in the east wind, when it blows from Yemen,

Lies a scent by which we recognized the fragrance of sweet herbs.

And the tenderness of grief and complaint stirs me,

And entices me with passion and longing.

I now trail my robe's hem in love, exultant,

Love-bewildered at heart, in the midst of madmen.

I cry their name among the tribe's tents:

Have pity on a sorrowful man whose vitals burn.

He has no refuge except your presence.

If you cast me out, who among creation will shelter me?

Or, if you show me mercy, how many kindnesses of yours

Draw me toward you through gracious gentleness!

    فاستصحب الفضل فيما كنت توليني

    You bestowed favors on me whose gifts were great;

So continue the generosity you used to show me.

I have no intercessor but my abasement and my poverty,

So have mercy today on the poorest of the poor.

Grant union or turn away: whatever you wish, I wish; and whatever

You find pleasing in my ordeal of love pleases me.

When shall I see myself, in union's shade, walking proudly in

The robe of nearness, while the herald of closeness calls me?

I shall surely forsake all humankind and cling, as long as

I live, to your door—for that is my faith.

My cheek is rubbed in the dwellings' dust; for no

Thing but nearness to you ever consoles me.

I offered myself as a sacrifice, and there is nothing but

Myself; and today I made my passion my knife.

Then grant pardon, if you accept my offering in love,

And sing to me in your name when the soul is taken.

    والفقد فيكم وجود العيش فاحيوني

    For being slain for your sake is life that never ends;

And loss in you is finding life—so bring me to life.
