يذودwards off الظُّبىthe sword edges عنهنّfrom them والحَدَقُand the eyes الصِّيدُhaughtily sidelong
أَمُرْهَفَةٌare they keen? بيضٌwhite ones ومُرْهَفةٌand keen سُودُblack ones
Sword edges and haughty eyes ward others off from them—
The gazelles protect them, and the slender wrists are prey,
are they keen white blades, and keen black ones?
Some are white, some are dark,
وعلىand despite أَنّthe fact that أَوْحاهُنّthe swiftest of them فتكاًin slaying صوارمٌcleaving swords
صياقلُهاtheir polishers أَجفانهاtheir eyelids والمَراويدand the kohl-sticks
And yet the swiftest of them in slaying are cleaving swords,
Though their glances promise sharp swords,
whose polishers are their eyelids and kohl-sticks.
Their eyelids and tender glances are sheathed blades.
فلاso no جسمَbody إِلاّexcept بالبواترby cleaving swords مُقْصَدٌmortally struck
ولاand no قلبَheart إِلاّexcept بالنواظرby gazing eyes مقصودtargeted
So no body is mortally struck save by cleaving swords,
No body but is aimed at by bright swords,
and no heart is targeted save by gazing eyes.
No heart but is sought by glances.
وماand not البارقاتُthe lightning-flashing ones الراعداتthe thundering ones عواصفstorming
بهمّيَof concern to me لولاbut for المُبْرِقاتُthe radiant women الرَّعاديدthe timid ones
Nor would the lightning-flashing, thundering storms be
The lightnings and thunders are not storms
of concern to me, but for the radiant, timid beauties.
unleashed at them, but their shining teeth.
وليسand is not الهوىlove ماwhat صدّنيhas barred me عنهfrom it غَيْرَةٌjealousy
ولاnor ماwhat لوانيhas turned me aside عنهfrom it لَوْمٌblame وتَفْنيدand reproach
And love is not what jealousy has barred me from,
Nor jealousy drove me from them,
nor what blame and reproach have turned me away from;
Nor blame and chiding;
ولكنهbut it is الشّكوىlament إِلىto منthe one whom أُحبّهُI love him
وإِنand even if حالintervenes صدٌّrebuff دونَهاin its way وصناديدand mighty warriors
but it is lamenting to the one I love,
But to complain to her I love
even if rebuff and mighty warriors bar its way.
Though estrangement bars my way, and spies;
هلِcan ...? الرَّوْضُthe garden منfrom تلكthose المحاسنthe charms مُجْتَنىًto be harvested
أَمِor الحَوْضُthe pool منfrom ذاكthat المُقَبَّلthe kissed mouth مَوْرودapproached for water
Can the garden of those charms be harvested,
Was that garden plucked from those beauties?
or the pool of that kissed mouth be drunk from?
Or that pool from the kisses I tasted?
وهلْand will ...? ظِلُّthe shade ريعانthe first bloom of الشبيبةyouth عائدٌreturning
عليّto me ولُقيانand meeting الأَحِبّةthe loved ones مَرْدودrestored
And will the shade of youth's first bloom return
Will the springtide of my youth return to me?
to me, and reunion with loved ones be restored?
Will my loved ones come back?
وِدادٌaffection بأَكنافwithin the shelter of الوفاءfidelity مُمَنَّعٌfortified
وعهدٌand a pledge بأَنواءِby the rains of الصَّبابةardent longing معهودwatered
Love fortified within the shelter of fidelity,
Affection is debarred in the arms of constancy,
and a pledge watered by the rains of longing.
And the troth of early life is broken.
وإِنيand I لخوّوارُindeed weak الشكيمةresolve فيin الهوىlove
وإِنْand even though باتremains overnight فيin خدَّيَّmy two cheeks للدَّمعfor tears أُخدودa furrow
And in love I am indeed weak of resolve,
Yet am I submissive, enamoured,
though a furrow for tears lies in both my cheeks all night.
Though my tears furrow my cheeks.
تَنَكَبُّswerve aside خوفاًin fear منof دميmy blood البيضُthe white blades والقَناand the spears
وتُلْوىand are deflected بهby it فيin لِيِّهِنّtheir bending المواعيدُthe threats
The white blades and spears swerve aside, fearing my blood,
The white swords and spears incline away in fear
and, as they bend aside, threats are deflected by it.
And twist in their wrists.
ويَنْزِلand yields ليto me عنfrom ثارهاtheir vengeance النَّفَرُthe band of men العِدىthe hostile ones
وتقتادنيand lead me فيthrough دَلِّهاtheir coquetry البقرُthe wild cows الغِيدthe slender, graceful ones
And hostile men relinquish their vengeance to me,
My foes exact vengeance for their ire,
yet graceful wild cows lead me with their coquetry.
And drive me with the docile cows;
ويقطعand cuts فيَّinto me الطَّرْفُthe gaze والطرفُwhile the gaze فاترٌlanguid
فقلْso speak فيof مَضاءِthe keenness of السيفِthe sword والسيفُwhile the sword مَغْمودsheathed
And the gaze cuts into me, though the gaze is languid;
And eyes glance at me, and glance away,
so speak of the sword's keenness while the sword is sheathed!
Speak then, of the flash of the sword, while the sword is sheathed!
