Since you left, my eyes' tears have refused to cease,

Nor will the burning anguish within my ribs be charmed away.

I count meeting death as but a part of what I endure,

And calamity seems small to me beside what I face.

And a thought of you stirs in me among the bān trees,

So I weep and move their gray doves to tears.

And many a grief they lamented to the day of parting,

Yet parting's heart neither softened toward me nor grew tender.

And why did they distinguish death from separation,

Though in effect they found no difference between them?

O our beloved, by God, I have never sought to turn from you

In forgetfulness, nor let my love for you be watered down.

Nor has longing's eye ever glimpsed me saying

To time's calamity after you left, 'Be gentle!'

And I remember the days of union and their sweetness,

And those bright nights and that carefree time.

So I remain bound to a breast where love's anguish has settled,

And a heart that accepts only yearning and throbbing.

And I could not endure an hour without seeing you,

But fate has barred the paths that lead to you.

So now, whenever my longing for you grows,

I soothe my heart with the phantom it encounters.
