إِلاّif not يكنْhe is قدalready هَوِيتُهI loved him بشراًa human being
فإِنّهthen indeed he is فتنةٌa temptation علىupon البشرِhumankind
If the one I have loved is not human,
Were he not the one whom I adored as a man,
then he is a temptation to humankind.
He'd have led men astray, for he's tempting as sin.
واحَرَباWoe to me! منfrom بياضwhiteness وَجْنتهhis cheek
تراكضتْraced about فيهin it ظُلْمَةُdarkness الشَّعَرِthe hair
Alas for the whiteness of his cheek,
More wondrous than whiteness of cheeks is the hair
across which the darkness of hair raced,
That flows down in darkness, the darkness of hair.
حينwhen تبدّىappeared سَوادُblackness عارضهhis sideburn
كماjust as تبدّىappeared الكسوفُthe eclipse بالقمرupon the moon
when the blackness of his sideburn appeared,
When the blackness of brows shows itself forth,
as an eclipse appeared upon the moon.
The moon is eclipsed, obscured like the moon.
