    Has this figure, like a Rudaynian spear,

    no tender disposition that [my due?] has demanded of him?

    And I think this delay has dragged on

    only to join one death to another.

    And it is strange that I should complain

    of the cruelty of a supple bān-tree branch.

    He shot me with two arrows from two eyes,

    from the backs of two bows—his two eyebrows.

    And if his two eyes deny shedding my blood,

    then question the redness of his cheeks about it.

    And why should his eye not deny knowing me,

    when it knows how my own eye confesses?

    فهل حاكم بين عَيْني وبيْني

    And I have no adversary but my own eye;

    is there, then, a judge between my eye and me?

    وصُبْتَ يداً فملأْت اليديْن

    You struck foes and filled hearts;

    and your hand rained bounty, filling both hands.

    It is as though you find no rest

    except in scattering your wealth by handfuls with both palms.

    May one who weeps over his wealth be your ransom,

    as an orphan weeps for both parents.
