ترقرقshimmered فيin جفنيْهhis two eyelids صِرْفاًunmixed مُعَتَّقاaged
He gazed, as though decanted Babylonian wine
shimmered in his eyelids, unmixed and aged.
وردّand drew back يداًa hand عنfrom ذيthat bearing حَبابfoam مُرَنَّقclouded
وحيّاand greeted بهwith it مِنْfrom وَجنتيْهhis two cheeks مُرَوَّقاclarified
He drew a hand back from a cloudy, foaming draught,
and offered clear wine from his cheeks in greeting.
وباتand he spent the night وشمسُwhile the sun الكأْسof the cup فيin غسقthe deep darkness الدجىof night

And he spent the night, while the cup's sun, in night's deep gloom,
faced his full moon upon a dune-grown bān tree.
وليand I have عبراتtears تستهلُّpour forth صَبابةًout of yearning

And I have tears that stream with yearning
for him whenever the clouds' lightning flashes.
أَلفتI grew accustomed to الهوىlove حتىuntil حلتbecame sweet ليto me صروفهُits vicissitudes
وربّand many a نعيمjoy كانwas جالبَهits bringer شقاmisery
I grew so used to love that its vicissitudes became sweet to me;
and many a joy has been brought by misery.
أَلذّI delight بماin what أَشكوهI complain of it منof أَلمthe pain الجَوىof consuming passion
وأَفْرَقand I fear إِنْif قلبيmy heart منfrom الوجدpassionate longing أَفرقاrecovers
I delight in the pain of passion I complain of,
and fear lest my heart recover from longing.
وأَذهلand I grow dazed حتىuntil أَحسبI reckon الصَدَّrejection والنوىand separation
بمُعْتَرَكon the battlefield of الذكرىremembrance وِصالاًunion ومُلْتقىand reunion
And I grow so dazed that I take rejection and separation,
on memory's battlefield, for union and reunion.
فهاso here أَناI ذوpossessing حالينtwo states أَمّاas for تلدّديmy restlessness
فحيٌّthen it lives وأَمّاand as for سَلوتيmy solace فلكَthen may you have البقاcontinued life
So here I am in two states: as for my restlessness,
it lives; as for my solace—may you outlive it.
