    ويرمي نَواكم مُهجتي فتُصيبُ

    Love of you watches my eye, and it pours down tears;

    and separation from you shoots at my heart and strikes true.

    Receive my greetings to you from the east wind,

    when the time comes for that breeze to blow.

    And a night we spent, the riding camels bare,

    the collars of darkness buttoned over them.

    لهنّ طُلوعٌ بالفلا وغروب

    All night they raced the stars through the darkness;

    they rise and set in the wilderness.

    Shedding the dye of darkness, just as there appears

    to your eye, from beneath the dye, gray hair.

    Throbbing in the breast of space, as though they were

    hearts themselves, while hearts pounded because of them.

    Passing through two seas, of mirage and darkness,

    they rise in the morning light and sink.

    يرى أَنني فوق النجيب نجيب

    Would that my mother's son, as the stars inclined to set,

    could see that I am noble, atop a noble camel;

    تفرّى دُجىً عن صُبحها وكروب

    and that I have turned care from me with a resolve

    from whose dawn darkness and sorrows are torn away;

    and that Sadid al-Dawla, son of the state's upright one,

    has brightened my sight—a radiant, awe-inspiring man.

    Kinsman to lofty deeds—praise of him enchants the company,

    as though pure praise of him were love verse.

    يكاد إِذا هبت عليه يذوب

    He has a nature that makes the east wind jealous;

    it almost melts when that wind blows upon it.

    And a mouth smiling at the grim face of demands,

    and a breast spacious despite the narrowness of the times.
