لهاshe has منfrom الرَّشإِthe young gazelle الوَسْنانdrowsy عَيْناهُits two eyes
وبيand in me منof الوَجْدlonging أَقْصاهits utmost وأَدْناهُand its least
She has the eyes of a drowsy young gazelle,
Her eyes have the intoxication of wine
And I bear longing in its greatest and least degrees.
And I have the intensity of passion, in part and in whole
بِنفسيَwith my life as ransom القمرthe moon المحجوبveiled طلعتُهُits face
عنّيfrom me وإِنand although كانhe is يَهوانيhe loves me وأَهواهand I love him
I would give my life for the moon whose face is veiled
I revealed the moon's face that was veiled from me
From me, though he loves me and I love him.
Even though it makes me insane and I make it insane
إِذاwhenever عزمتُI resolve علىon السُّلوانforgetting love خادعنيhe beguiles me
بثغرهwith his mouth فثنتْso drove away عنّيfrom me ثناياهhis front teeth
Whenever I resolve to forget, he beguiles me
When I intended to complain, it deceived me
With his mouth, so his front teeth drive forgetfulness from me.
With its mouth, so I bent its branches away from me
وَليّhe appointed هواهُhis love علىover قلبيmy heart فَعذّبهso tormented it
وحكَّمand gave dominion to الحبَّlove فيin جسميmy body فأَضناهso wasted it away
He set his love over my heart, and it tormented it,
And it imposed its love on my heart, so it tortured it
And gave love dominion over my body, so it wasted it away.
And love took hold in my body, so it emaciated me
