دعواleave (you all) للحُمَيّاto strong wine ماwhat استباحتْهit has seized it منof عَقْليmy reason
فإِنيfor I رأَيتI have seen الحظّfortune فيin حيّزthe realm of الجهلignorance
Leave to strong wine what it has seized of my reason.
For I have seen fortune in the realm of ignorance.
وماand not زالتceased الأَيامthe days يجريruns نظامُهاtheir order
علىin العكسreverse حتىuntil أُدْرِكَwas attained الجِدُّearnestness بالهزلthrough jest
And the days have never ceased to run their course
In reverse, until earnestness was attained through jest.
وهلand is there فيin فؤاديmy heart فَضلةٌspare room تَسَعُcan contain الهوىpassion
وماand not العِشقpassionate love إِلاّexcept شُغْلoccupation قلبٍa heart بلاwithout شغلoccupation
And is there any room left in my heart to hold passion?
And love is nothing but the occupation of an unoccupied heart.
إِذاif أَنتyou لمnot يصحبكkeeps you company إِلاّexcept مُهذَّبٌa refined man
فخِلُّكَthen your friend منone who أَمسىhas become وحيداًalone بلاwithout خِلِّa friend
If none but a refined man keeps you company,
Then your friend is one who has become solitary, without a friend.
فَدَعْso leave لذويto those possessing الأَموالwealth ماwhat اغتبطواthey rejoiced بهin it
وَصُنْand guard ثمراتِthe fruits of الفضلexcellence بُخْلاًout of stinginess علىfor الفضلexcellence
So leave to the wealthy what they rejoice in,
And guard the fruits of excellence, out of jealous care for excellence.
فإِنّfor indeed الفتىthe young man منone whom غادرتْهhave left him خلالُهhis virtues
فريداًalone وإِنْand even if أَضحىhe has become منamong الناسthe people فيin حَفْلa throng
For the young man is he whose virtues have left him
Alone, even if he finds himself amid a throng of people.
