ياO لَهُfor him مِنْof ضاربٍa striker باللحظwith the glance رامِan archer
Do you think he nocked an arrow made from a sword?
Do you see an arrow has flown above the swords?
What an archer he is, striking with his glance!
Oh, what a shooter with a glance that aims!
لحظاتglances بِتُّI spent the night منهاfrom them طافحاًutterly drunk
أَيُّwhat سُكرٍdrunkenness دامlasted منfrom أَيِّany مُدامِwine
Glances that left me utterly drunk all night—
Moments overflowing with sweetness from it
What drunkenness from any wine has ever endured?
What lasting intoxication from any wine?
وبأَكنافand around المُصَلّىthe prayer ground جِيرَةٌneighbors
لاnot يُجيرونthey shelter مُحِبّاًa lover منfrom غَرامِpassion
And around the prayer ground dwell neighbors
And in the precincts of the mosque, neighbors
Who give a lover no refuge from passion.
Who do not protect a lover from passion
شَغَلواthey occupied كلَّevery فُؤادٍheart بهوىwith love
وأَمالواand they turned كلَّevery سَمْعٍhearing عنaway from مَلامِreproach
They kept every heart occupied with love,
They preoccupied every heart with love
And turned every ear away from reproach.
And turned every ear away from blame
وأَباتواand they kept all night كلَّevery قَلْبٍheart شاردٍwandering
مِنْbecause of هَواهمlove of them فيin عِقالa hobble وزِمامِand a rein
And made every wandering heart spend the night
And they insisted every wandering heart
Through love of them, in fetters and reins.
From their love, on reason and restraint
ماwhat عليهمupon them لوif أَباحواthey made freely available فيin الهوىlove
ماwhat عليهمupon them منof صِفاتtraits المُستَهامِthe lovesick lover
What harm would it do them if, in love, they freely offered
It does not matter if they indulged in love
The traits of the lovesick that they bear—
It does not matter, their qualities of dignity
مِنْof خصورٍwaists وَشَّحوهاthey girded them بالضَّناwith wasting
وعُيونٍand eyes كحلوهاthey lined them with kohl بالسِّقامِwith sickness
Waists they have girded with wasting,
Of waists they cinched with leanness
And eyes they have lined with the kohl of sickness?
And eyes they lined with sickness
