Through you, my lord, the rift in hopes was healed.

My heart aches for you, my Lord, beloved of pilgrims,

So may good fortune remain yours for all time.

May your prosperity last forever,

طلعت بمصر بعيد الغيا

ب عنها طلوع هلال الصيام

ب عنها طلوع هلال الصيام

You rose in Egypt shortly after your absence

You rose in Egypt when the crescent moon of fasting appeared,

from her, as the crescent of fasting rises.

So can the eye refrain from seeing you,

فهل يسع العين ان لا تراك

فهل يسع العين ان لا تراك

وتقنع بعد الضيا بالظلام

وتقنع بعد الضيا بالظلام

So can the eye bear not to see you,

And be content after your splendor with darkness?

and be content with darkness after light?

I have often turned my gaze to you,

صرفت كثير التفاتي إليك

صرفت كثير التفاتي إليك

وتعرف أني كثير الغرام

وتعرف أني كثير الغرام

I have directed much of my attention toward you,

And you know I am full of passion,

and you know that I am full of passion.

I have no passion but for the High One,

وما بي غرام لغير العلا

وما بي غرام لغير العلا

ولا لي اشتياق لغير الكرام

ولا لي اشتياق لغير الكرام

And I have no passion for anything but greatness,

Nor longing except for the noble ones,

nor do I long for anyone but the noble.

So how could you decide to be distant from us

فكيف قضيت لنا بالبعاد

فكيف قضيت لنا بالبعاد

وعدلك قد شاع بين الأنام

وعدلك قد شاع بين الأنام

How, then, have you sentenced us to separation,

When your justice has spread among all people?

when your justice is renowned among humankind?

And how could you rise in glory

وكيف انبعاثك في مجلس

وكيف انبعاثك في مجلس

وليس به مطرب من كلام

وليس به مطرب من كلام

And how can you be stirred in a gathering

When there is none to sing your praises?

where no speech brings delight?

Of what use is nearness to the abode of love

وما نافعي قرب دار الهوى

وما نافعي قرب دار الهوى

ومن دونها مانع الاحتشام

ومن دونها مانع الاحتشام

And what use to me is nearness to love's abode,

When barriers of propriety stand between us?

when the barrier of bashfulness stands before it?

If you allow me to see you, I will see you

فإن ترني فبعين اراك

فإن ترني فبعين اراك

فإني أراك بعين التمام

فإني أراك بعين التمام

So if you look on me, use the eye with which I look on you;

With the full perception of completion,

for I look on you with an eye that sees perfection.

By God, if your affection for me is not in words

وباللّه ان لم يكن بالكلام

وباللّه ان لم يكن بالكلام

ودادك لي فليكن بالسلام

ودادك لي فليكن بالسلام

And, by God, if not through conversation,

Let it be in well wishes and peace.

then let your affection for me be shown in a greeting.
